I never got the whole "proprietary programming" thing, though. Then again, i'm not a good programmer.
How do you claim copyright on code? Like I understand copyrighting the system, but what if I write a function that, minus a couple variable names, look the same as another persons function. They could be halfway across the world, but i get sued all the same. It's weird.

You don't even see the source code of proprietary programs. You basically get a program (kernel module in this case), don't know what it actually does, but must use it so Linux can talk with your hardware.
