OpenGL isn't free software. As far as I know most the implementations, except Mesa, are proprietary.
There have been innovations in free software, namely file systems and networking stacks. At least the last two Sony consoles have used BSD networking stacks.

Many people who write FOSS are paid. There are many companies that invest heavily in FOSS. The biggest contributors to Linux are large corporations.
There is a huge amount of high-quality FOSS. Gimp is not an example, but there are many cases where FOSS crushes anything proprietary. For example: web browsers, media players, kernels, and filesystems.
