Is running a late 90's/early Y2K game on an older Windows on a Virtual Machine a good way to bypass them simply not working on modern machines?

You're aware you can just change the enviornment the .exe runs in without running a VM right? You can just run the program in a XP environment.

Depends. I've had luck with this and running some 3D shit in a VM. VirtualBox doesnt really support GFX passthrough IIRC (I had gfx corruption last time I tried it), but qemu works fine if you know how to set it all up.
Mind you, if you can just get it running via wine, do that. It's far less trouble.
