If you reverse nas, it's san.
Nas is mostly a single consumer grade box. Cost is 3-4 digits.
SAN is generally many boxes connected via a segregated storage network and managed by an intelligent control system. Not consumer grade, costs are 5-7 digits

This isn't true at all. They're similar enough these days that SAN just refers to block level storage. QNAP have used NAS/SAN in their marketing. Many people call their Synology boxes SANs. It's just a matter of usage.

San. = Storage area network, a network dedicated for storage with protocols like iscsi.
Nas = Network attached storage, a storage hooked up on the network, to share files for instance with protocols like smb.
