LOL Management Engine has been around in Intel chipsets for at least 16 or 17 years, yet all of a sudden everyone is getting their panties in a twist over it. If there was a major exploit involving it we'd've heard about it by now. Oh and also on Windows it's involved in decrypting protected video content, bet you didn't know that either.

I used to test video drivers for the graphics dev team. All I know is you had to have the ME driver installed in Windows otherwise protected content wouldn't playback. Seems obvious it's involved in the decryption process.
You can turn it off in BIOS. You could also theoretically borq it completely with a null firmware update, but I have no idea what that'd do to your Windows installation. Of course if you're not running Windows then it's not even an issue.
