I think I'm going to start collecting malware. Because Virtual Machines aren't perfect and because I like to be safe, I figure I should probably buy a cheap old laptop just for malware storing purposes - I don't want to brick my actual desktop if something escapes containment.
Any reccs for good laptops from the early 2000s, and any tips on this kind of hobby?
All the interesting bits of malware are from the 90s or the early 2000s, so I don't need anything modern.
Please share them for us, anon

the cheapest thing on ebay that works would suffice, perhaps a older netbook.
If I were you I wouldn't go with a laptop but instead with a desktop, you could probably find an old desktop cheaper than a laptop and you could expand storage space easier with the desktop.
Where is that one website dedicated to collecting malware? I use to have it but I lost the link. They had something like multiple threads with people giving out packs of 60,000+

there are plenty of them. i do malware analysis on the side since i get plenty of samples from work and elsewhere.
virtual machines are pretty secure, it is very rare to find something that can escape a virtual machine and those are the cream of the crop where you wont be able to find them posted online. as long as you properly set up your host, guests and networks correctly you are 99.99% fine.
using a regular machine for it means you have to constantly reimage the drive every time instead of simply reverting snapshots.
and then running old machines like xp and 2k leaves you with much less to work with, as the shit you will find today wont do anything on most of those os's. xp is easier to get results out of but even then you have to find the perfect balance of patches to make sure things work
I don't think malware can escape a VM brah
Biggest malware ever.

This nifty feature is baked into the kernel, no possible way to remove it.

I'm pretty sure I have heard of programs infecting a VM and then the host computer in the past.
And its always better to be safe than sorry.
>>55145776
Sandbox the vm.

run a VM in a VM in a VM in a VM in a VM

Watch out that it doesn't fuck your network up. Also don't plug any flash drives or whatever into your virus machine.
An easy way to get viruses is to google free [insert game name] download cracked no-virus
>>55144645
I really love that idea, but i think you should make it public, as a "malware's box" or something. Btw I think that an Eye Pc would do the job, plus you can throw a bigass drive in it.
Or in another way you could put them on a server w/ Linux and make them public so everyone can download or to upload infos and shit. And STILL have a notebook backup
>>55145909
sharing malware is actually pretty illegal, and depending on where you live you might actually get done for it if you dont use a VPN
plus if people want non-rare malware, they can easily get it from vxheaven.org
Seen a lot of dumb losers on /g/, remember this fuck interested in "archiving" everything and it was because it was the only way for him to have control over anything in his worthless life.

You can't lie too, you're on the Internet.
>>55145926
not really. there are plenty of public well known places to collect samples others have submitted. it only becomes illegal when you share the sample by infecting others unknowingly
