Vista was pretty fucking bad.

Mistake Edition did have some blue screen issues and generally no real updates, but a fuck ton of vista computers were shipped with 0.5 - 1gb of ram which for people who dont use computers and know better is a fucking joke. the operating system itself takes up almost all of the 1gb pc. I mean fuck sake, they were so god damn desperate and knew vista was bad that they made a way to right click your usb and "use as ram" i mean come on m8 open your eyes

Win2k never caught on in home environments because a lot of games didn't work on it because they were written for DOS and not NT. It was also not actually a consumer version of Windows (which is what ME was supposed to be). By the time XP came out, it was also a piece of trash until the SP came around, after which it gained some rapid adoption. Not everyone played the game or used the software which relied on DOS anymore, and those who still did either found workarounds or could do emulation.

It wouldn't know what the fuck to do on an UEFI system
It can't handle USB particularly well, and you wouldn't have the drivers for the USB controller

Addressing of large memory might be an issue
Probably won't know what to do with non-IDE data transfers such as SATA
Video drivers is going to be a absolute pain to find if not impossible
Speaking of drivers, all of your hardware will probably end up driverless

Vista was the best regarding aesthetics though.

Been a windows faggot since 3.1 and only recently started using Ubuntu. I like it a lot, I can definitely see the up sides of being able to configure everything and having the power to delete what you want.

yeah anyone that says Vista sucked never gave it a chance.

The security was massively improved and it was much needed even though the poor communication between vendors and microsoft was pretty bad (I recall Nvidia not making a working driver for quite a few months after Vista came out)

It sure it ran on shitty PCs but if you had a decent PC it ran nearly as fast as XP did from a user standpoint.

After SP1 it was a great OS and after SP2 it was essentially just Windows 7 for the most part

Anyone that says Vista sucked likely upgraded from a 256MB piece of shit, or bought a 256MB piece of shit "budget" system.

Vista was fine on any system with 1GB+, and far better than XP ever was.
>>
>>55148419
>Please elaborate.
I did. Maybe it was good when it was all there was, but when you've used newer or competing platforms, it really falls short. It feels much more ineffective at utilizing screen space than System 7 or later Windows versions, the program manager model is just plain annoying to work with, likewise for the file manager. Overall, I can use it, but I don't really enjoy it.
>DOS was a lot better without Windows.
Yeah it was more solid that way, but aside from the 8-character filename limits, damn that shell is braindead after you get used to a *nix environment, plus while the primitiveness of it means there's nothing to break, it means it's more vulnerable to being mishandled by shit software and can need annoying extensions for things like networking.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (not the 64-bit Edition which was for Itaniums only)

Fastest fucking OS I've ever used (and after a few decades I've used pretty much all the ones of consequence from AS400 mainframe stuff through traditional desktop OSes and hundreds of Linux distros).

That damned OS is just wicked fucking fast, sad to see it faded away and never really took hold like it could have. Shitty driver support from manufacturers (not name brand manufacturers, however, just shitty hardware makers) proved to make it nothing but trouble but if you had good quality name brand hardware like I always do it was never an issue.

Lightning fast, I might have to reinstall it sometime now that I use SSDs and see just how much faster it can really be. Rock solid stability in my experience of using it, but the day I got my hands on the first Windows 7 beta long ago I knew it was time to move on and Windows 7 remains my primary OS to this day and for many many more to come.

Worst? Windows 10, period, hands down, even worse than the Windows 8/8.1 abomination and I won't use it. I did grab the Enterprise LTSB to do some research a few weeks ago, installed it in a VM, still nothing to like about it whatsoever.

Just a useless OS they're shoving down people's throats for no good reason.

Protip: Don't believe the hype about DX12 and Windows 7 not being "technically" capable of supporting it, that's not true at all and Microsoft had several builds of Windows 7 at a developer conference with DX12 supported natively along with some dev drivers from AMD/ATI and Nvidia showing it was possible but the hardware makers didn't want to keep supporting Windows 7 - it wasn't a Microsoft decision entirely, it was the hardware OEMs pushing to move on.

Regardless, Windows 10 is the worst thing Microsoft has ever produced for a wide swath of reasons.

Vista was almost unsable on my old pc, didn't even finish the install.
>>
>people saying vista was the worst

At the age of 9, I built my first PC with parts my dad bought.

>build pc
>works
>install ME
>after two weeks it fucks up
>format
>reinstall
>repeat ad nauseum for a year
>think that I failed my father
>install Windows 2000
>works fine

fuck you macro$haft.

On the plus side, I learnt more about backups that year than ever.
Fortunately I already knew how to use DOS from my windows 3.1 days, so formatting wasn't much of an issue.
>>
>What is the best OS you've ever used, /g/?
Slackware.

>What is the worst one?
Windows ME, easily.
>>
>>55142256
Best is honestly windows vista-10

Worst is 98SE-XP mainly because of the viruses and bugs.

every time i go back to a older pc with xp or even 7 with a oldass broken slow hdd i cringe

Also to really think about it, Win7 was amazing when I first started using it.

Win10 on the other hand is probably the most cancerous inconsistent piece of shit I've ever ran on my computer, but I never even considered it as a real option.
>>
Windows 2000 was fucking amazing on its time. Best Windows eva.

On the other hand, Me was shitty shit. It barely worked.

Windows ME is the best version of Win9x after you download the unofficial service pack for it.

>removed obsolete real mode DOS for faster boot times
>native USB storage support
>introduced 3D Pinball and internet board games
>uses the more stable Win2k TCP/IP stack
>first Windows with image thumbnails
>better file type association

Windows 8, shit was counterproductive on desktop.

What's up with all the windows 10 hate? It works flawless on my five year old system.
>>
>>55142343
Fucking nostalgia
>>
>>55161967
I hate it because of the botnet and the forced updates, ffs I have a 2mbps connection, downloading an update takes half an hour
>>
>>55162388
>2mbps
god-tier if you consider i'm still on 56k tops.
>>
>>55142256
Best is linux mint, worst windows vista, 8 and 10. I can't believe that someone would pay money for that windows carbage.

Damn brings back memories of watching porn in 3kbps in dialup and while the image loads, someone would pickup the phone or still the connection would get interrupted.

It does the job. And i can't ask anything else, our zone is pretty much on it's own when it comes with coverage. We literally have only one provider, and it's shit.

How's youtube on 56k
>>
>>55162644
If i'm lucky i get to watch 720/480p, if i wait some time. Otherwise 360 is the norm. Hell, youtube also downgrades quality automatically to 240.
>>
>>55162693
no way you can watch 360p on 56k, its like 1mbps bitrate

actually i know they can dynamically scale the bitrate down to 300kbps but even still, could you do a speedtest cause maybe you have better than 56k
>>
>>55162786
Doing it right now, i'm still waiting for the upload test to finish.

WORST: MDOS
>>
>>55162809
probably shouldn't have asked, how the fuck are you gonna upload an image
>>
>>55162809
I think it won't finish anytime soon.
But i'm sure any program i have works between 65-23kbps. 65 is achieved on night time without any other client connected, which is right now in my timezone, while 23 during the rest of the day.

>>55162870
Oh, i think that's the speedtest, i uploaded images before and it works.
>>
>>55162411
I feel your pain, I to was stuck to shitty dial-up from 1997-2014. Limitation of where I was living at the time. Could get satellite internet but the high ping rate plus cost/setup fees made it worthless.Think god I was able to make the jump to 10 meg cable when I moved.

My best is win 7. I actually loved Vista. Then again I had a Q6600 in 2007 with 2 (months later 8) gb ram so it was never laggy for me. XP felt pretty bad for me. It always felt dated. My worst OS was windows 10 insider preview. I've yet to try the full version but I'm not in any rush.
>>

How do you get this?
I never had higher than 33.6 kbps.
