How is using a computer different from operating any machine? That's what it was considered back then, nothing more. There was nothing new about it, it didn't look unsettling to anyone.

This thing however is different. You sit among other people, with limited control over the appropriateness of your gestures and movements, completely isolated and helpless. It is taking something away, it's not adding anything. I look at this and know that I don't want this.

This. If I sit really close to my tv, I 'll be visiting a much larger virtual world.
>>
Do you think he raped anyone before that pic was taken.
>>
>>55140538
What's it going to do? VR is absolutely retarded. As someone else stated, it's nothing more than strapping a screen to your face. Is it somehow more realstic or dangerous because it's closer to your eyes? Were walkmans virtual worlds of sound? What about eyelids? They sit directly on your eyeballs! What dangers could the NSA inject into those? VR is a scam preying upon idiots.
>>
How is this 'terrifying'? Sure, a lot of people wearing VR gear may seem a bit weird, but definitely not terrifying.
>>
>>55140624
You realize your view of the world is shaped by mass media, right? The difference here is that given Facebook's track record they'll add eye tracking into it to figure out which ads you pay attention to or force you to watch (this has been tested in mobile devices). The number of sensors will go up with each iteration of the Oculus so that Facebook can collect more information on you. Selling to to advertisers although horribly unethical may seem innocuous but Facebook is more than happy to share data with law enforcement. We really aren't that far from every law enforcement agency on the planet having access to a 3d map of your house, data on your personality traits, probability of resistance to specific ideas, etc.

Information is power, especially against your enemies.

To me the terrifying part is basically that those people look completely helpless. Through VR they are losing the perception of the world around them, thus being in an extremely vulnerable state. They are defenceless in that state. You could just walk by and stab a knife into someones head, and nobody would even notice. It's pathetic. Who would ever want to put themselves into such a position among a bunch of strangers? It's a vision of the future I personally find disgusting in many ways.
>>
>>55140697
I get that, but this scenario reminds me of the people who believe we are all going to to be forced to take implanted chips as a means of identification and payment (mark of the beast). It seems foolish to accept either scenario when you have such strong opinions against it. How would such a thing ever gain acceptance when it would obviously be viewed with great suspicion from the start?

Medical appliance, simulations, long-distance communication and probably something else that is useful.

Sure, it's going to be heavily used for entertainment, but it's also going to be used to save lives and educate people.

Also, most people don't think vr is unsettling, they just think it looks moronic.
>>
>>55140788
People accepted their personal lives on display through social media. People have accepted that companies like Google and Apple can not only track you throughout the day, they can predict where you're going next.

I know, but they are going to add the 3D avatar full immersion element to it, where you'll have to be physically present to interact with it

It'll allow people to virtually "go to work" in an online environment where it will ensure people are engaged and accountable for

>>55142892
Fuck no, but that's the point, like in BNW - They will introduce it as a benefit and from there the masses will come to accept the technology as common place, and from there they can begin adding layers to this function beyond the scope of the initial release (eg: electrically induced orgasms)

But anon, not everybody is some neckbeard that actually imagines this to be enjoyable. It's a retarded concept and there's absolutely nothing new about it. If people wanted to meet online as VR avatars, they would already meet online as regular avatars. But with the exception of some mentally retarded weirdos, nobody does this. It's simply not very appealing, as most people are not afraid to leave their houses.
