What useful things do you have on your desk right now? (Aside from the obvious)
A long male-to-female USB cable plugged into my computer. I know I could use a hub but this is cheaper, simpler to position and easier to store out of sight. Plus I can take it with me as an extension for charging stuff outside the home.

My $1k computer is literally over a piece of wood and there's no space left for anything else.

A multicard reader is always useful to have around.
Paper and a pen
One of those little precision screwdriver things. Flat head. Apart from undoing tiny screws it's also a little scraping tool, a hole poker, a slim object for getting into tight spaces, good for fishing out little pieces of crud that fall into the keyboard, etc.
