Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Keyboard layout is fine really. Most people are used to it, and people wouldn't buy the old school ones. Maybe in a few years when retro will be more fashionable.

Maybe they can switch their charging cable to USB type c.
Then they could offer
-2 USB type c
-2 USB type a (3.1)
-1 mini dp
-1 hdmi 2.x
-maybe rj45

That's a good price, but IMO it's a bit big to be carrying around.
>>
>>55092026
I hate this 15inch is too big meme

I used to carry around a 7 lb 17 incher and didnt really mind it (except for that laptop's horrible build quality)

Anything smaller would be even better

I say T530 is worth it cause the T430/T420's viewing angles are shit
SHIT
>>

what would you recommend instead?
I'll probably be carrying it around a lot.

Are all the thinkpad models the relatively the same size?

>Maybe they can switch their charging cable to USB type c.
Then they could offer
>-2 USB type c
>-2 USB type a (3.1)
Companies like to spend as little as possible. Why take time and effort to layout the type a 3.1 when with an adapter a type c can do it? This should be 2 more type c's
>-1 mini dp
Type C has native support for Dp. Another type c here is all that is needed
>-1 hdmi 2.x
Why even? At this point theoretically there would be 5 DP adaptors. DP to hdmi adaptors are already plentiful. If you really want another port, add another type c to fill up the last hardware hub.
>-maybe rj45
This is best idea here.

Don't do all USB type c yet. Just for flexibility. You don't want to carry around a toolset of adapters do you?

I'm fine using adapters. To be honest if i were designing a laptop style computer these days, I'd have one type c root hub (2 ports), and a power connection be the only externally visible ports. I'd probably also include a slot loading disk drive (BR/DVD±RW/CD±RW). I'd pack in a type c to DP adapter and a type c to 3.1 adapter with a pass through type c.

Thinking about getting a Thinkpad x140e new for $388. I'm mainly wanting it because ~$400 is my budget, it has to be through Amazon, and from the little reviews there are the build quality is good and you can upgrade the RAM and HDD/SDD. I don't know if there are any reputable Thinkpad resellers on Amazon that you know of but I guess if I could get a T420 or TXXXs series refurbished I would prefer to do that.

I can get a 4337 lenovo dock for $15. No key or adapter. I have no use for it or anywhere to really place it for now but should I get it anyway? Seems like a really good price.

I know, I know, I should ditch the old Seagate and get an SSD. But I'm too lazy to reinstall the OS on an mSATA and too cheap to spring for the 500 GB MX200. I'd rather save up for the Thinkpad Retro.

I'm just being cheap because I want to avoid pouring money into a 5-year-old computer when something much better could be just around the corner. I wouldn't want to spend almost $200 on an SSD only to get a year or two of use out of it.

Sup fellow W520 bro

I'm probably going to upgrade to a decent SSD later this year. I was also thinking about the Retro, but in all honesty it's probably going to have some ULV CPU which is not appreciably more powerful than my i7-2720QM, and the xx10 / xx20 keyboard is already the best I've ever used, so I really cannot see any reason to replace it. If I get some upgraded storage to take care of the one obvious bottleneck then I'm good for the next few years. Also for the record, the Seagate drive is not too bad. Mine has over 20,000 power-on hours and it's healthier than a lot of WD drives I've seen with a third of that figure.
>>
>>55095177
Not too bad I think. I got an i7(shut up) 4gb 430s without a hd and charger for 220 a couple months ago. Total was about 285 for everything. I still want to do the FHD upgrade but i'm scared.

My T601F plays 1080p animu and movies smoothly even on the integrated graphics. It's not easy for the hardware, it's where I've seen the highest system temps, even higher than vidya, but it's perfectly watchable.

Really, if anything is going to be obsolete about the T601F anytime soon, it's going to be the ports. No USB 3, no onboard HDMI or DP, none of those hot new meme ports like Thunderbolt, not even an SD card reader. Expresscard and the Advanced Dock can cover some of that, but hopefully the chinks develop a T62 board we can use to keep our GOAT Thinkpads going strong before those new interfaces become absolutely essential.
>>
is it worth paying $200 for the x240 1080p ips screen? i can only find one seller for the updated panel without ghosting problems in the us and he's trying to jew me
>>
>>55096647
Thanks senpai. I always worry about spending too much on this stuff.

I'll likely buy a new palmrest in a couple of months for $50 and it will all be brand spanking new.

Tbh I'm not sure the fhd mod is worth it. 1600x900 looks fine on the screen .

Got some used X220T models today. Most of them have screen "smudges" (I say smudges, but they seem to be damage -- see the white lines in the picture).
Is this the actual panel, or is this just the bezel in front of the panel? What do I need to replace or repair?

It's not like i have a choice anyway.

It's either no battery or housefire.

I won't unplug it though, I'm going to use it because of the disgusting wiring on the sides and it's better to connect it on the rear with the docking.

But to make sure 65W adapter is okay for a docking station?

Why there are 2 thinkpad threads if this one doesn't have reached the bump limit?
Anyway.

So, im planning to get a thinkpad but my budget is somewhat limited if we leave aside other things.

How much a new battery (not chinese) should cost and how i know its the real deal? im looking for great battery life but most sellers over here advertise batteries that last 2.5 hours or less.

If the thinkpad i buy uses 2.5" 9mm what i have to do to fit a 7mm SSD on it? nothing?
Im planning to put a cheap ADATA SSD on it or a 850 EVO if everything goes right.

Is it worth it to spend $150 more on a T420/X220 instead a T400/X200 if all im going to do is Netbeans and MSOffice?
