Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Guys, I have a 2006 era T60 that I use for browsing occasionally. I've got a spare 120 GB SSD sitting around. Is it worth throwing it into the T60 given its SATA limitations and just general old-ness? If you guys think it is I might consider getting the max 3 GB of RAM and an Ultrabay too so I can keep whatever is on the old slow HDD accessible.
>>
>>55047586
Yes, the decreased latency of an SSD can be seen even if you're running SATA revision 1.
>>
>>55047586
Yes, even on SATA I an SSD makes a huge improvement over an HDD. If you do a Frankenpad, you'll get access to SATA II speeds.
>>
>>55046448
I would say no.

I just bought an x220 with a 9cell and currently prefer it to my x1.

Thanks. I have an SSD for my OS on my desktop so I'm familiar with how great they are, just wondering how much I should invest into this T60.

Unfortunately the display is the 1024x768 version which I think means it's the smaller 14.1" screen if I remember correctly. All of the Frankenpad instructions I've seen suggest using a 15" T60 as a base.

Yea. You can get a comparable one for under $300 if you get lucky on ebay.
>>
>>55047987
400 bux is a shitload, you want to spend like 250 at most for a really good condish X220.
>>
>>55047876
Not necessarily, there were 1024x768 15" T60 models. How wide is the keyboard bezel? 15" models have around a 1-inch bezel, 14" models are much thinner, less than half the size.

You can still use it as a basis for a Frankenpad anyway, you just won't get the benefit of the sweet Flexview screen.
>>
>>55048048
Alright thanks. The bezel is like half an inch, maybe less than that so I think it is the smaller one but that makes sense about it still being able to use the T61 mobo.

I may just put the SSD in first and see how much better it performs before deciding on if I even need that much more power.

Anyone have any experience with Ultrabay batteries? I know they're generally considered to be not worth the money and that they aren't implemented very well, but here's the use case I have in mind:
>main battery gets close to dead
>put in ultrabay battery
>hotswap main battery
>remove ultrabay battery
>keep working
Will this work or will the system just shut down when the main battery is removed regardless of what's in the Ultrabay?

>>
>>55048958
Slice battery isn't available for my Thinkpad. I know their capacity sucks, that's why I'd only be using it for a couple minutes at a time to hotswap the main battery. I just want to know if what I want to do is even possible.

Accuracy's fine. The low pressure level limits how many "zones" your brush has from the force you're pressing on the screen with.
I'm just a hobbyist with my drawing tablet, and I'd say it feels alright. The edges on this model are iffy, but I don't have the canvas full screen so I never have to deal with them.
Haven't tried Osu, Krita worked fine out of the box on Xubuntu 15.04, even after upgrading to 15.10 no issues.

It is crazy when you think about it like that but some people don't mind spending a lot of money on something they really want. To me $1700 is like 10 months of disposable income, to others it's an impulse purchase. I'd still go with the 5 maxed out t420's personally

T60 bro here again.

What's the consensus on the wireless adapters in these thinkpads? Worth replacing if they start acting up? I keep dropping wireless even though my router is solid. Once the connection drops once, I'm unable to reconnect though the network utility still detects the presence of nearby routers. In order to reconnect I need slide the adapter's power off and on again. Running Xubuntu.

>>
>>55053779
I suspected as much. The thing has been trouble for me for a long time. Basically it seems to crash when trying to do something "intensive" like streaming 720p video, so I figured it was a heat issue.

I'll look for instructions on how to do what you suggested and look into a new adapter. They aren't that expensive.

Kind of a side issue, but I've also been reading up on possible upgrades for the CPU. Looks like I can theoretically swap out the Core Duo for a more powerful Core 2 Duo if my motherboard revision is the right kind. They're only like $30 anyway so it's not a big deal to upgrade it.

The problem is lshw just gave me back "revision: unavailable" or something like that for the motherboard. Maybe I'll have better luck putting my old HDD back in and using CPU-Z in Windows. A forum post from about 8 or 9 years ago suggested that almost all of the motherboards except for some very early ones should be able to accept Core 2s so hopefully I'm in luck.
>>
Brehs, had my T60 for a while. It's got the 2Ghz processor and the IPS. There are a couple things left to maximize it. Replace battery ($70), upgrade RAM ($16), upgrade board to X1400 ($50) for a total of $136.

Pull trigger or is it time to move on and get an X220?
>>
>>55057348

I'm getting T420 from this site (polish): http://komp-net.pl/index.php?mod=shop&display=details&item_id=1025

I have a x61s and I use xfce. I haven't yet put a SSD into it, and it still boots quickly/just werks. I dunno about the x40/41, I have no experience with them, but I would be skeptical unless you are running a very lightweight distro, and they are hard to find and usually cost almost as much as the x60/61 anyway. You shouldn't be paying more than $100 for any of those, and you should only be paying close to that if it is in very good condition. I got mine in good condition with a dock for just under $70.

While the x61s is great for taking notes and doing other lightweight tasks, I don't use it for anything else. Outside of school, I don't use it much.
