When the 9800gts were popular I found one with a huge custom cooler on it for cheapo.
It wouldn't fit in my case so I took the giant cooler and heatskink off, and just put a small stock intel cooler on it. Let the case fans cool everything else passively.

It would overheat sometimes. But I had that thing running good for nearly 2 years.
