Okay, /g/ after 3 broken installations, and four hours searching for solutions, I have come to you. I'm trying to install nvidia drivers for my gtx 960 on my ubuntu 16.04 distro.
I went through the regular channels with the additional drivers software that comes with it. It tells me to download the 361 driver. I install it, I reboot, and the entire distro is fucked. Black screen with blinking cursor that won't accept any input. Why is nvidia widening my anus? Pic related.

Once you install them, restart the machine, press 'e' when you're in the GRUB boot menu and have the option you're trying to boot into selected, and add "nomodeset" to the line.
It'll look something like:...ro quiet splash ...
and just throw in "nomodeset" like:...ro nomodeset quiet splash ...

Linux has pretty damn awful driver support. Sorry. Not much that can be done unless you get lucky. It's still one of the biggest problems unfixed problems.
