Let's discuss laptop batteries and battery life.
My laptop is over 9 years old now, but it still gets like 3 hours of battery life from the original battery that came with it. I get the impression that this is unusual, since most old laptops on ebay and other sites are listed as having dead batteries.
How old is your laptop, and does the original battery still work?

set charging thresholds and cycle them as little as possible
lithium likes to stay between 30-70% charged (~3.80 to 3.85V/cell)
If you are using the laptop stationary, drain the battery to 75% and remove it

That's because you've been sitting in your mom's basement over the past decade and haven't actually used it. That also answers your second question about why your laptop is still in mint condition while most stuff on eBay looks rather battered.

x220 with an official double cell battery. Left it completely uncharged for months nd now I get ~20 min when I used to get like 7 hours
Five years old Samsung X430, battery lasts about an hour of light usage (internet browsing). I hardly ever leave my house with it anymore though. I have a phone for that.
