it doesn't matter what im looking up it will just come up with "person" or "mans face" or "lines" etc 95% of the time
this isnt an error they've just decided to make it useless for some reason
is there any alternative reverse image search engines that actually work?

They're reducing the accuracy of the image search to reduce the load on their services. Most normies won't use this feature anyway.

It's not just with anime.
Yandex is actually better than google for reverse image searching most of the time surprisingly, it has a couple browser addons as well.
