Everything MS does is at least three years behind everyone else.
They're even behind in data mining
they're getting suited and booted for the next stage of computing, it's making me sick because if they're doing what I think they're doing, it needs to be done so badly but there's no world in which I want MS to continue their hegemony for another whole generation
this is how I see it:
>unify all Microsoft operating systems into Windows Core, so that mobile, desktop and xbox are essentially running on the same system and applications can be cross-developed much more easily
>start building the tools necessary for VR/AR/MR (ie, positional tracking, 3D rendering) directly into that core
>AR is covered by the hololens, but Rift and Vive both plug into Windows, so it doesn't care about VR as long as whatever HMD you're using is interfacing with holo-windows (whether that's on pc or xbox)

I hold out hope that SteamOS might merge with SteamVR and open the way to a linux-based "virtual" operating system, but if windows doubles down maybe valve won't bother ... then I guess windows takes the home-VR market while the mobile manufacturers squabble over implementing mobile AR (google's investing in magic leap and I'm sure apple's working on something)
