Is the new macbook a meme machine or could it be good for college? If not, any recommendations for a light-ish computer with solid battery life? Cost isn't a huge factor.

It's still a bit too expensive for what it is. XPS 13 is a really good choice, but if you like apple, wait until atleast Monday for their big WWDC conference. They'll probably refresh one of the main MacBooks.

I wish Apple would make the differences less confusing on their site. I'm guessing they want you to go to an Apple Store and have a Genius try to market it to you and then woo you into buying one.

At least the MBP is easy to tell-apart. That shit be thick and have more ports.
>>
>>55003430
With less battery life, a worse screen, worse trackpad, worse support, the list goes on...

Some people are willing to pay a premium for better experiences
>>
>>55003420
It's not a 'better', it just clocks higher and is more powerful. The fanless M processor handles everything aside from gayming very well.

I would highly recommend it, the thinness makes it super easy to transport and fit in a backpack. It has good battery life and is completely silent since it doesn't have a fan, it also never heats up that bad. Its basically an iPad laptop. The only thing you will want to watch out for is the keyboard which has little key travel and can feel a bit gooey to type on.

Cost literally is a huge factor.
If you can buy the exact same performance for 4 times LESS (in a computer that is 6 years older than the one you are planning to purchase), there is something you are missing here.
You could literally buy 4 x230 systems for the same price with BETTER specs on them (16gb ram, 240gb ssd) for the same price, and get better performance and usability.

Battery life on the x series is pretty good; you could even order a new fucking OEM battery for that much and get an awesome battery life out of it.

HOWEVER, why? There are power outlets in every fucking room of every fucking college ever. You could carry a fucking desktop around a college.

>>
I have a 2010 macbook pro, I paid 900$ for it then- It's the only laptop I've had for the last 6 years.

Obviously it's extremely durable. I've upgraded it from it's original 4GB RAM and 250GB 5400rpm HDD to 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD for 100$ last summer.

I plan on using it for the next 4 years or so.

As long as you don't plan to play games on a laptop (although you can still stream through steam), it should be good for a very, very long time if you pick a durable model.

macbooks also increase the chances of you getting laid. Don't get a big laptop, stay away from 17' or "gamer" laptops.

Obviously, with it being 2016, there are decent, slim PC's that are just as good as an apple product for around 300$ cheaper spec-wise. Any lower and the quality of product starts to rapidly degrade...

the touchpad on a macbook pro is still 2-3 years ahead of anything on PC though.

when I got it, my battery life was generally 8-10 hours when doing light tasks like word processing and web-browsing. 3 hours when doing intensive tasks like WoW (at the time)

Now I get about 4-6 hours battery life while doing light tasks and 1 1/2 to 2 hours intensive tasks.

Important thing to note is that I had a friend with the 2011 macbook pro in college, his macbook had an error message telling him his battery was dying. (he always kept it on and plugged in, never let the battery cycle).

with any laptop battery though, if you don't use it, you lose it.

I'll probably end up replacing the battery sometime. But I've opened it up and cleaned it a total of 2 times (about once every three years, once when it got two cups of water spilled all over it by a drunk girl)

I've dropped it down flights of stairs quite a few times and it has been dropped various times, been "smashed" etc. thing still works like a champ.

I'm not sure if the current lineup of macbooks retain that same quality craftsmanship though

It's hard to believe, but my some weird magic thing it really feels 100% EXACTLY like an actual physical click. It actually feels like the pad is being pressed down. Or Dell Chromebook 11 for $180 if you don't mind buying used. It gets 9+ hours of battery life, but also has an i3 and 4GB of RAM. Install Linux on it so you have a real OS and it's the perfect laptop, besides only having 16GB of space.
>>
If money is not an issue, why cheap out and get a MacBook?
If you max out a x260 you get a lot better battery life, better keyboard, a nicer looking laptop and decent performance.
It would be a waste of money, but you said you weren't a poorfag so who gives a shit?

Get one of the X series Thinkpads and then get an extended battery for it. If you want to throw more cash at it then add in an SSD.

Battery life of up to 12 hours or more, light, and if you have an IPS screen, nice looking too. And still cheaper than a Macbook.

I've got an X250 myself, I love this little Thinkpad.

Stop trying to deflect, you complete idiot. You were already told how useless your opinion was, and you should go read a manpage or two before you come back; you might fucking learn something.

Depends on what you're in college for.

Only need to use the office suite and a facebook machine: MacBook if you have too much money, random consumer laptop otherwise

Need things like Photoshop: desu, Macbook Pros are the best choice here. XPS13 is great too.

Normal windowsfag: XPS13 or if you don't want to spend a lot of money and like the clit, Thinkpad or Dell latitude etc.

Engineering: Business Computer, like Thinkpad, Latitude, EliteBook etc. preferably loaded with Linux. Used if you don't want to spend a lot of money, new if money isn't a concern.

Because mom and dad are paying for it.

Anyway OP it's a retarded product, literal Facebook machine.
A macbook air would be a much better purchase IMO if you really want an apple laptop.

Just buy a Mac and marry a man.

I want a small laptop with a small screen. The kind of thing you can whip out and travel with easily (I travel a lot for work and can't fucking stand airport security). Problem is all the laptops/netbooks with small screens have shit specs. I want something comfy to type on, fast and responsive. Need it for shitposting, torrenting, and general work. Don't give a shit about weight.

Something like this any good?

Smells like the free food I get from working at a multi billion dollar tech company

No. As a macbook pro owner myself, and having used the 12 inch macbook myself, do NOT get the macbook. Its keyboard is trash its screen is meme tier, and it thermal throttles under fucking VP9 YouTube videos.

If you want a good college machine either get the 13 inch Macbook Pro, or if you like the 12 inch form factor, get a Thinkpad X260 with the 99.5 w/h battery that lasts 17 hours.
