First off, this thread is against board rules (read the sticky).
Second, your friend is going to college. He doesn't need a gaming laptop, he needs to be frugal. I'm in college too -- I bought a Google Pixel for $400 dollars (MacBook-level hardware at a third of the price) and put a Linux distro on it. He can go about it how he will, but there is no reason to ever spend more than $500 on a college computer unless you're rich as shit.
