A gpu must stay inside a case, that must be completely closed in aluminium os similar, completely dark inside. There's no reason to have a transparent case, so there's no reason to care about the appearence of a computer part.

They were terrible 10 years ago, they are now, meanwhile open air designs can now cool 300W monsters and keep them under 70C with barely noticeable fans, years ago you coudln't keep fermi cool nor quiet no matter what kind of air cooling you threw at it.

I have a gf and I like the look of the AMD card more because it's nice, plain, and basic.
Would I buy it because it looks nicer? No. I'll buy it because I don't like wasting money so I'll pass on the 1080 and 1070. Will its looks be a factor in my purchase when choosing the brand to buy? Yes. I hate to admit it but I'll always go for the card I think looks nicest.
Reference 480 looks nice as fuck and has the added benefit of being the cheapest version available.
