How do we fix this? Most android devices are running an outdated version, and over 50% are still running kitkat or older.
>>
>>54980187
50% of them are embedded devices with no internet so it actually doesn't matter.
>>
>>54980187
"We" can't, fucking carriers and their bullshit updates. Also, this is how bussiness works, you make a phone marketed as "LASTEST ANDROID VERSON 6.9!!!!!", people will buy it, then just say "oh no, this phone cant run the new android version anymore :^)))), but you can buy our newest flagship". Fucking samsung, I'm not going to buy from them ever again, 2 years and counting since I got the phone with 0 updates.
>>
>>54980326
They just updated my S5 to 6.0. Stop being poor and complaining about no support on $50 phones. :^)
>>
>>54980388
Mr. Samsung, I payed 200$ for this phone from official stores, not some second hand ebay shit.

>>

Considering they make and release something like 30 different phones every year, expecting top tier support for anything other than the flagship is idiotic. Especially considering all the carrier certifications, fees, testing, and other bullshit.

If you care about updates, you either do it yourself with custom roms, or pay money for $600+ Galaxy flagship, Nexus, iPhone etc. You got what you paid for.

KitKat was the last good version of Android anyway. I wish I could downgrade to it, the new interface and design they introduced with lollipop is retarded
>>
>>54982084
I had 4 android devices in my life. The only update I ever got was from 4.4 to 5.0 (which is garbage) on my Lg G pad.

Meanwhile my iPhone 5 bought in 2012 in running smoothly on iOS9+. Which is surprising considering how shitty the hardware is.

And when Im playing games the iPhones actually lags less than my Galaxy S3 (which is younger) that is stuck on 4.4.4.

I like android but having no updates is just sad. It keeps your device fresh and with the latest feature. I never once felt the need to replace my iPhone 5 and I will probably keep it until the battery dies.
>>

Google should ban OS modifications beside default launchers and require that hardware documentation to be public.

None of this would be a problem if bootloaders were required to be unlockable and the Android driver model wasn't a fucked up relic that makes it impossible for custom ROMs to support lots of devices in a generic way.

Google is somehow working on this by giving more time to manufacturers to be ready when the update goes live.

The Xperia z3 got Android N preview in March and Samsung is rumored to launch the note 7 with Android N or get it a couple of months later. Obviously Nexus devices will always get the updates first though.

But non flagship devices, carrier-loked devices and most chink shit phones have 0 chance getting early updates if they ever get updates.

Infact, I'm sad that all the new devices are now on Lollipop or Marshmallow with no option to put KitKat on them.
>>
I'm part of the KitKat group and there's nothing to fix. It's a tablet I barely ever use anymore and I have no reason to flash a new ROM. I really don't give a shit that neither the manufacturer nor Google care to keep it up to date anymore.

I've got Lollipop working pretty well on a Nexus 7 2012. Just had to wipe everything, run a manual TRIM, keep it light on the number of apps and never let it turn off. (It's basically useless for a short while following a reboot.) Sounds janky as fuck to describe it that way but it does work quite smoothly to be honest.

There's very little incentive for manufacturers to update older models.

Change that, and you can fix it.
>>
>>54985983
And /system read-only partition was a huge mistake, preventing rebootless updates entirely and requiring them to be wholesale, not piecemeal. And so is the way the ARM SoC device trees are done and the drivers, particularly graphics, are proprietary blobs.

There's no excuse. Security updates especially should be for all devices on the platform, within one single day. 24 hours. Maximum. That is not unrealistic; it is merely parity. Anything getting in the way of that is stupid bullshit.

Truth be told I don't know how you get there from current Android without a substantial burn-it-down/start-again redesign.

If we had a RISC-V SoC, open drivers, and we were doing it all over again we'd never make the same mistakes. And carriers can GTFO, just like Apple made them do.

You never buy 50 € phones, they're all shit. And they are still making profit since they are around 10 $ to produce.

I bought a Z2 in 2014 and regret "updating" after every major update. Jelly Bean was best, and I think I'm going to rollback soon.

The new UI is pure shit. The newest Android also crashes my explorer.exe when I want to transfer files, unless I freshly restarted my PC.

I'll use this phone forever or go back to my K800i. What I am already doing, since I only use this phone when I need to take photos. The audio problem still persists and it seems it will be never solved.

Fuck modern phones, I won't buy a new one. I already wasted 30 € on these audio adapters. I could buy K800is for 60 years from that money.

Android isn't free as in freedom either, just because it uses the Linux kernel or has some open source elements. Google intentionally made android open source to give it out to cell phone companies (Samsung, Sony, etc.), so they can spread it among the people. And they definitely had an interest in accepting the OS because it would have been tedious and expensive to develop and advertise their own OS and compete with everyone else. Anywho, that way, Google can put its software on every phone (Google search, maps, gmail, play store, drive, etc.). Google didn't make android open source because they care about user freedom, it was a pure marketing decision, and a brilliant one too.
The free as in freedom thing is a GNU philosophy, however android isn't GNU/Linux, it's Android/Linux.
Google makes it money through data and advertisement, and oddly enough most Google-made programs can't be uninstalled from Android.
