I'm new to Linux and can't understand this Richard Stallman thing.

Who is Richard Stallman and what have he done? Why is he a meme?
>>
>who is Richard Stallman
it doesn't matter who he is; what matters is his plan

>what has he done
chimped out at conferences and eaten his own toe fungus

>why is he a meme
because he resembles the typical /g/erm

> Plan

Stallman is to the computer world as Al Sharpton is to the real world.

>what have he done?
He started a movement that demands all software written have its source code accessible, modifiable and redistributable. He created a viral license that uses copyright law to enforce this when any code using that license is used.

The license is called the GPL.

So if project A uses the GPL, and project B uses any part of project A, it needs to make its source code available. Furthermore, anyone can distribute project B (for free) to as many people as they want.

Thats a gross over simplification but thats the idea.

He did this because companies selling code were being dickbags to him and wouldn't let him fix problems with the software they sold.

His movement became especially popular because Linux used this license. Linux is the most prevalent operating system kernel on the planet and powers more hardware than anything else.

>Why is he a meme
Because he's not normal. He has lots of weird habits, dresses weird, talks weird, doesn't have a real job, is probably autistic, etc
>>
He dropped everything for >muh free software
How to beat non-free softwares?
by making better free alternatives
He fucked up in the late 80s-90s when micro$haft went full rampage on the consumer market and oracle was on jew mode.
We needed a good alternative to windows and oracle DB, it didn't happen, now it too late.

He's a literal fucking genius.
Read his incredible story on wikipedia.

He's an idealist that sticks to his principles and the mascot of /g/ - Tech Support.

Also, according to him, the operating system is GNU/Linux, so you should refer to it as that... unless if you're specifically talking about the Linux kernel, of course.

Because freedom is a noun. You would understand if you were autistic.

this makes little sense

the problem isnt that he is steadfast in his description and categorization of free vs nonfree software

the problem is that he says that nonfree software can never be defended, where in fact only some things can be arguably said to be 'wrong' to be non free or closed source.

his description of free software is pretty basic and intuitive and hasnt changed in a long time.

perhaps using "free as in freedom" is a little charged, but it is true that his guidelines fit software that users have full control over, which is at least a heightened form of freedom.
