ANGLE is throwing this
[vo/opengl-hq/d3d11-egl-rgb] Failed to create D3D11 Device: Unspecified error (0x80004005)
on red with hwdec=auto or hwdec=auto-copy on nvidia drivers, hardware decoding itself works fine even with the error. You might want to suppress it because it makes people confused. (possible driver issue?)

No errors with hwdec=dxva2 . Using sourceforge build and vo=opengl-hq in config
>>
>>54975724
Which GPU? Does dxinterop work? (--vo=opengl:backend=dxinterop) Do you have a multi-monitor machine? The default backend (backend=win) uses WGL, which enters exclusive fullscreen mode randomly depending on the whim of the driver developer. That might cause problems with Alt+Tab if it also refuses to leave exclusive mode. The next mpv build will use ANGLE as the default backend.

Does it work better when this isn't the case?

I'm not confident that dxinterop works on that GPU, but you could try adding
vo=direct3d
to your config instead. That's the only thing I can think of other than waiting for a build with ANGLE (or using one of the Git builds in the OP.)
>>
>>54975831
just tested it, it doesn't.

I use the default vo config so I don't know what to type on mpv.conf. I don't know this stuff like you guys, I just like the player more than mpchc
>>
>>54975724
>>54975765
from last thread
latest mpv use DirectComposition in angle..so that probably the fault here. Build 1st of June 2016 doesnt yet use DirectComposition

Your drivers can't handle angle DirectComposition? Try with git-9f42760.7z build from sourceforge?
>>

>>54975731
Triangle is too big. It's left size is longer then the others.

>>54975818
Rounded egdes. Also what with that shadow?

Yeah, I'm quite picky
>>
>>54975734
Yeah, if it gets that error when it's auto-probing, it probably shouldn't print it in red. Which Windows version by the way? The d3d11-egl-rgb hwdec might only work on 8+, which would mean it prints that error for all 7 users.
>>
>>54975897
Right i'm on W7
>>
>>54975831
hey it works now, I added direct3d and it worked. Will this have any influence on video quality?
>>
>>54975916
It's probably not much different to vo=opengl, but it would definitely be worse than vo=opengl-hq. The direct3d backend is only meant as a last resort if nothing else works. For example, it only supports bilinear scaling and it only does hardware colour conversion for yuv420p and NV12 input.
>>
>>54975871
I really hope that bug doesn't affect all HD 3000 users. If it does, mpv will probably have to have an option to disable DirectComposition.

Also, if fullscreen DirectComposition swapchains are broken, then things like Windows Store games should be broken too, so maybe mpv and/or ANGLE is doing something wrong here.
>>
>>54975916
just use mpchc
>>
>>54975994
This too tbqh. I like mpv, but if you can't use vo=opengl{,-hq} you might as well be on MPC-HC. mpv's Direct3D render is not really maintained or cared about.

Yeah, but I kinda assumed mpv doesn't because it focuses so much on terminal usage. I just always typed (well, autocompleted)
mpv video.mkv --subs-file sub-file.ssa
even though I was in a filemanager either way most of the time.
>>
>>54976706
Okay, I can reproduce it. (As well as a number of other memory leaks related to resizing)
>>
>>54976706
>>54977554
Seems to be a GPU driver issue. It's triggered by FBO resizes. Every time you change panscan or change the window size, the texture needs to be resized to the new size. This apparently introduces a memleak on nvidia drivers, and probably others

I can work around it by making the FBO texture fuzzy (like we do for interpolation), but that could possibly break some user shaders.

Maybe I could add some sort of work-around in the form of allowing user shaders to bind textures in fuzzy mode instead of regular mode? Seems ugly though.
>>
>>54977814
Actually, the issue was dumber than that: The FBO resize never deleted the old FBO.

Should be fixed in master.

I know flip and mirror exist as video filters, but how do I bind those to a key? There doesn't seem to be a command or a property in the vein of video-rotate.

Not really. Some volume and shadows will be fine. The thing with shadows that they are often overdone, and the shing with volume that with it somehow always results in too much of the roundness.

Closest example to what I want is probably WinXP classic theme. I'm not saying it should be exactly like that, just a general direction. As you can see it has volume and some shadows and yet its unobtrusive and everything is still square and pointy.

Because it was one of the few high-quality torrents for it that had any seeders at all. When I looked on Nyaa, the closest one that had a decent amount of seeders was at 7.1GB.

English subs for an anime? How? All the episodes have different timings anyway, don't they?

what's the use of the blend-subtitles flag? Why should I enable it?

Blend-Subtitles makes it so that subtitles become a part of the video itself. I think.

Why not just using MPDN?
>>
>>54992021
right, from manual
Blend subtitles directly onto upscaled video frames, before interpolation and/or color management (default: no). Enabling this causes subtitles to be affected by icc-profile, target-prim, target-trc, interpolation, gamma and post-shader. It also increases subtitle performance when using interpolation.

The downside of enabling this is that it restricts subtitles to the visible portion of the video, so you can't have subtitles exist in the black margins below a video (for example).

If video is selected, the behavior is similar to yes, but subs are drawn at the video's native resolution, and scaled along with the video.

>>

>Why not just using MPDN?
Bad code, inefficient, proprietary, only available on wangblows, bad algorithms.
Their Chroma upsampling algorithm upscales each RGB channel individually before merging, instead of doing the opposite. This makes their code MUCH slower. It's an easy example.

Why the fuck would you use a sharpen filter?
>>

>>

Well, that depends on when the sharpen filter is applied I suppose. If filter is applied before scaling it shouldn't effect, if it is applied after scaling subs could also be sharpened.

So say I'm using a sharpening filter. Hypothetically, if I put it before CrossBilateral, it will sharpen it first, then upscale it, right? Naturally, I know you should only sharpen the final image so as to not amplify the error introduced by the sharpening filter.

Naturally this requires your refresh rate to be an integer multiple of the frame rate (or close enough that MPV will speed up/slow down the video very slightly to compensate).

Frame blending interpolation? Yes.
SVP vector interpolation, yes, by downloading the Linux client: https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/SVP:mpv

>>54993166
It upscales each RGB channel individually (3), then merges them. It should merge them and then upscale them (1).
>>

Chroma upsampling algorithm doesn't upscale RGB. Also how do you know? Luma and chroma upsample algorithms are closed source in mpdn.

https://github.com/zachsaw/MPDN_Extensions/blob/master/Extensions/RenderScripts/ChromaScaler/Chroma.hlsl

Yes, but consider that of the common video framerates, 144 is only an integer multiple of 24, whereas 120 is an integer multiple of 24, 30 and 60.

And higher refresh rate requires faster GPU, so you might want to switch to even lower refresh rates, eg. 48Hz or 72Hz if you can sync to it. This is scriptable.

Assuming you don't use ridiculously GPU intensive options, for 24fps content it will look the same. display-sync is reported as "DS: 3.000/0" or something like that. The first number should be an integer, the second should be zero.

Interpolation should be disabled when using video-sync=display-resample. The whole point of interpolation is to work around imperfect frame timing by blending frames (making them blurrier). With perfect frame timing this only harms quality.

No, I'm just saying that based on his contributions, he probably knows a lot more about the subject matter than you do. Besides, it's glaringly obvious that upscaling each chroma channel individually before merging is ridiculously less efficient than merging first and then upscaling.

sometimes it feels like it's not actually interpolating with mpv, svp from what I heard is better, but also takes more resources.

Honestly, if there was a simple way to use svp with mpv I would use it, but I am not really craving for it, so I don't care much.
>>
>>54993640
The sole exception is when you're using tscale=oversample, which only touches frames overlapping frame time boundaries. With video-sync=display-resample and correct refresh rate this will be zero frames.
>>
>>54994029
So why isn't oversample the default?
>>
>>54994118
Probably because it looks slightly worse in the case where it's actually doing something. And interpolation is off by default so this isn't a bad decision.
>>
>>54994150

Is someone able to walk me through compiling and installing the source code instead?
>>
>>54994208
You do not, because 23.976 is close enough to 24 that MPV will speed it up so each frame can be shown for exactly 5 refreshes. This speedup is unnoticeable by humans.

Check for "DS: 5.000/0" output when it's working correctly.

no. user shaders cannot change the order in which mpv runs rendering passes

they will run in the order their hooks resolve. But if multiple scripts hook the same texture, they will be run in the order you gave

It's not perfect frame timing if it's not integer ratio. In that case it's just another workaround like interpolation, to make imperfect timing slightly less annoying.

>that for a 23.976 fps video, it showed "DS: 3.000/0", even though my display is only supposed to be able to show 60Hz
That's weird, at 60Hz it's supposed to show "DS: 2.500/0". Do you have some script automatically changing the refresh rate?
>>
>>54996506
No. I bought a new 4K monitor with free sync, but its range is given as 40-60Hz.
I tried the autospeedwin.lua but when I realised it didn't work, I disabled all of its options by putting // in front of the lines in the config.

Or does linking it in my config with the scripts option still enable it with default values? But even then I never gave the file a refresh rate higher than 60 to work with but I'll check that tomorrow.
>>
>>54996586
It's possible that the free sync is interacting weirdly with MPV's video-sync somehow. Can the monitor's OSD report the current refresh rate?
>>
>>54996094
but the algorithm still ensures consistency

for example, 23.976 Hz on 60 Hz with display-sync enabled will speed the video up to 24.000 Hz and then guarantee a perfect 2 3 2 3 2 3 2 ... pattern (with no random 4s or 1s mixed in like you might otherwise get due to drifting clicks and slight framerate mismatches)

The wrong combination of shitty drivers, hardware decoding, and video output method can result in video with a limited RGB range rather than the full range. VLC's default settings caused it on at least half of the setups it was installed on. Right now my setup is pretty shitty, and I'm forced to use vaapi for everything.
