What's your process for cleaning up your pc when it runs slow? I've run scans from two different anti viruses (Avira and avast) and tried malware scanning with anti malwarebytes but am still seeing sluggish performance.

Bonus question: what Antivirus are you guys running? avast is starting to get annoying with all its ads for premium service

dban + fresh install of gentoo

Which one? I'm running common sense 2012. Should I upgrade?

2016 edition. I got it in January just to be sure

Wipe, reinstall.
For anyone else's computer, I just run ccleaner, defraggler, and disable any unused startup entries.
MalwareBytes AntiMalware as well, just in case.

If you're seeing sluggish performance and can't find either a) a ton of junk on your hard drive or b) malware, the slowness of your computer is down to background processes and services. Watch your task manager and see which programs are sucking up resources. I wouldn't be surprised if it's your antivirus software itself.

On Windows, I use Comodo. They offer their premium service but (at least for now) respect your choice to say no and hide that box permanently. It helps that I don't download anything unless I know what it is and that it comes from an official source.

If you look in the settings you can turn off the ads on avast.
