Apple designs their silicon and software, other manufacturers use off the shelf hardware and a skin for a java based OS, its not hard to figure out.

Optimizations, but even those usually aren't enough. Take away iOSs flashy animations and you'll find Android us generally faster. iPhones would be a lot better off with a thicker phone with better specs, but consumers are retarded.
