DX12 doesn't translate to async compute. Take the Tomb Raider game. It supposedly uses "async compute" but with nvidia support behind the game, there is no difference to be had. So maybe they are using a different implementation of async compute that benefits no one. Mean while games like Hitman/Ashes/Warhammer uses versions of async compute with performance gains for AMD cards with little to no gain for nvidia.
I'd say a better accurate judge of a game performance is vendor partnership, not API usage.

I can game pretty well for a low end GPU. Dota 2, LoL, Heroes of Storm, COD/BF and GTAIV run quite well on my Intel HD 4000. Instead of going through so much hassle of matching parts and searching for drivers, I rather spend a few hundred dollars and buy a console to run GTA V and other high end titles.

Having owned all 3 consoles of this generation I can tell you that all 3 of them have had major updates from the moment I turned them on that took longer than the entire process of building a PC start to finish.
