it comes from wmii. adding an extra "i" would be wmiii - so they call it i3 for short. the full name is "i3wm". there is no confusion.

If you're doing nothing but tiling terminal windows, you may as well use tmux in a framebuffer. There's nothing you're doing that requires X.
