he was a phd student at a university at the time. i know most of you don't have this experience, but EVERY phd student gets a talk from the university at the beginning of their program that makes it clear that the work they do at the university belongs to the university.
disregarding the niggardly misunderstanding about whether the professor gets the name recognition or not, there should never be this kind of miscommunication

There's a difference between using someone's code in your project and outright stealing it then claiming it's yours. Open source is not about getting other people's work and claiming it's yours.
