What are you working towards? Need advice? Want to know how to use certs to get jobs? Post it here.

If you've got a tech career:

>Job Title
>Years of Experience
>Degrees/Certs
>How did you find/get job
>Pay
>Location

I need motivation, I feel stuck at a help desk position and want to become a network tech.

Almost done with my BSBA: Finance, and I bought a study guide for the CCNA because I want a better job.
Saw an ad on Indeed.com
Iowa
>>
I'm currently actually studying for my Network +, I took cisco 1-4 years ago, but failed the CCNA because I ran out of time, the last question was the router programming question and I didn't pace myself properly so now I think that getting my Network + should get me into a good job, and lead the way for me to study for the Security plus.

Is this actually a good game plan? Am I newfagging to hard to actually do anything with my life? I just want to make like 30k a year for now.

Also, no I havn't finished college, and just work a dead end job right now.

20 y/o, Florida. Studying for my A+ atm, followed by Net+, Sec+ and others after (not sure which). In sophomore year of college for Computer Science BA and Networks Systems AS. Working as a barista to save money for tech. Bitches love latte art. Eventual goal of getting my CISSP and working as a penetration tester or something else in comp sec.

Any advice or am I on the right track?
>>
What certificates do I actually need to become a system administrator?
>>
>>54899692
Stay in school and get the degree, it opens lots of doors. Comptia are considered entry level certs, but the gov't loves them. CISSP is a joke in the sec world, hasn't been updated in 8 years. That being said, HR types and C level people are impressed with it.

Depends on what you want to do. Storage=VMWare
Servers=Linux or MS
Network= Cisco or Juniper

MCSA would be a good place to start.
>>
>>54900018
Got recommended to get a Juniper certification, is this pretty widely accepted in the industry?

One guy I know swears by it, my goal is getting a job working with databases possibly so I can see it being useful eventually
>>
>>54900018
Thanks famalam
>>
>>54900035
I want to work more with hardware than software, so I guess networking is the way to go?
>>
>>54900043
Cisco and Juniper are the 2 big hitters in networking, you can't go wrong with either. My shop is all Cisco, so I am Ciscocentric. Juniper is still a very good platform.

I want to get try my hand at being a security analyst. No prior training of any kind, so im a bit clueless as to where I should start.

I just cant take any more of this dead end job. 24 years old with nothing to show for it. If I have to go back to school then I'll fucking do it at this point.
>>
>>54900080
I went hardware as well. So my career arc is like this:
PC Support 35K
Moved to server support - 50K
Morphed in VOIP and networking - 85K + 15K bonus

Been with company 15 years, MCSE and Cisco certified.

Here is a good resource to get you started. Do this class, the other previously posted links, learn from cybrary and Udemy. Practice at enigmagroup and other hacker training sites, then you should be well on your way.

Best of luck to you. Maybe I will see you at enigmagroup. Be sure to post an introduction thread. The community is great and will gladly help you with any problems/questions you may have. And the training missions are some of the best on the web.

Bless you anon. Ive been so lost as to where to look these past few days. Anything to get my future moving is a good thing
>>
>>54900191
YW fellow anon, someone once did the same thing for me once. Focus was what I was lacking. Take it slow and steady and you'll do just fine.
>>
>>54900139
What was your certificate pathway?
Also, which MCSA should I get? Windows Server 2012 or 2008?
>>
>>54900227
Im in no rush, but I'm not joking when I said I have no experience in this sort of thing. Im doing it based on the recommendation of a friend as well as through my own research.

How long did it take you to get to a level you were satisfied with, or that at least got you a job?
>>
Do you think it's unrealistic to pursue the CCNA as one's first cert?
>>
>>54900236
MCSE
CCENT
CCNA R&S
CCNA Security
CCNA Voice
CCNP Voice
CCNP R&S
Now I am concentrating on Design, so CCDA and then CCDP later this year.

I had 2 previous IT jobs, one for 9 months then got laid off. Next one was on site PC repair that blew but paid the bills. Did it for 6 months and then started with my present company. 2-3 years in I knew this company was for me. They funded certification and training programs and promoted from within. In all honesty a large corporation would be a way to go. You get to work with other experienced admins,, kinda like an apprenticeship.
>>
>>54900385
Thats what i've been told as well. Just have to get some sort of base in order for these guys to actually want to hire me I suppose.
>>
>>54900272
Depends on the individual. If you have no networking and just try to learn it from a book you will probably fail. If you invest in a router/switch and a decent laptop to o labs I think you could be quite successful taking the CCNA as your first cert.

anyone on who's taken it recently? im getting anxious
>>
>>54899692

they say you shouldn't load up on too many certs because it makes you look like you just took a bunch of brain dumps and loaded up on certs
>>
just a reminder the time to take the 801/802 is almost up, the 901/902 will be the new A+ course very soon
