Xeon and i7 are mostly the same, but some chip licensing differences, and oh yeah locked multipliers.

You can get a bit more fair advantage with an i7 but people usually choose Xeon because it's provided by their vendor most of the time.

ECC RAM support.
They're higher binned than i7s.
Support all CPU features.
