My room mate and I thought about a similar concept some time ago.
But ours wouldn't have been this great because we thought about using piano keys.
That idea wasn't meant for WASD of course.

Fit hall effect sensors under the keys, glue magnets under the caps, tie the hall effects to an arduino, emulate a gamepad with 4 axis, voila.

ben heck did pretty much exactly this on youtube, but i was hoping there is a consumer product available by now. its such a good invention
