My room mate and I thought about a similar concept some time ago.
But ours wouldn't have been this great because we thought about using piano keys.
That idea wasn't meant for WASD of course.

Did you tough on using real piano keys with mech action or synth keyboard ones?
Fit hall effect sensors under the keys, glue magnets under the caps, tie the hall effects to an arduino, emulate a gamepad with 4 axis, voila.
