Why waste 3 + years studying computer science when all you want is to program and you usually a plan - you either want to program websites or make software - if you want to make it for corporations just to earn cash you need an certificate, if you want to do it to help others and make a decent living out of it - you don't need anything but working hard, staying organized and having patience.

Literally this, I was stumped when I found out all my uni's calc II courses require only a 60% to get a C. When I asked why this was, the reasoning was that many people fail the course so they lowered their standards.

On average it is about 3 years - the amount of time you're going to spend learning various theories, and little programming while getting a computer science degree.

Having patience - because your ideas do not materialize over night - you have to write code and don't lost hype after day 1.

>Intelligence tests and psychometrics have generally found high correlations between different aspects of intelligence, rather than the low correlations which Gardner's theory predicts, supporting the prevailing theory of general intelligence rather than multiple intelligences (MI).[19] The theory has been widely criticized by mainstream psychology for its lack of empirical evidence, and its dependence on subjective judgement.[20]
>Linda Gottfredson (2006) has argued that thousands of studies support the importance of intelligence quotient (IQ) in predicting school and job performance, and numerous other life outcomes. In contrast, empirical support for non-g intelligences is either lacking or very poor.[38]
>To date, there have been no published studies that offer evidence of the validity of the multiple intelligences. In 1994 Sternberg reported finding no empirical studies. In 2000 Allix reported finding no empirical validating studies, and at that time Gardner and Connell conceded that there was "little hard evidence for MI theory" (2000, p. 292). In 2004 Sternberg and Grigerenko stated that there were no validating studies for multiple intelligences, and in 2004 Gardner asserted that he would be "delighted were such evidence to accrue",[39]
>the human brain is unlikely to function via Gardner's multiple intelligences. Taken together the evidence for the intercorrelations of subskills of IQ measures, the evidence for a shared set of genes associated with mathematics, reading, and g, and the evidence for shared and overlapping "what is it?" and "where is it?" neural processing pathways, and shared neural pathways for language, music, motor skills, and emotions suggest that it is unlikely that each of Gardner's intelligences could operate "via a different set of neural mechanisms" (1999, p. 99)

Description: Arie de Ruiter, who in 1995 was Head of Information Technology Development at Elsevier Science, made a proposal to the STI Pub group, an informal group of publishers consisting of representatives from the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), American Mathematical Society (AMS), American Physical Society (APS), Elsevier, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). De Ruiter encouraged the members to consider development of a series of Web fonts, which he proposed should be called the Scientific and Technical Information eXchange, or STIX, Fonts. All STI Pub member organizations enthusiastically endorsed this proposal, and the STI Pub group agreed to embark on what has become a twelve-year project. The goal of the project was to identify all alphabetic, symbolic, and other special characters used in any facet of scientific publishing and to create a set of Unicode-based fonts that would be distributed free to every scientist, student, and other interested party worldwide. The fonts would be consistent with the emerging Unicode standard, and would permit universal representation of every character. With the release of the STIX fonts, de Ruiter's vision has been realized.

For most engineers who are actually working math isn't required very much. In fact you'll hardly be using math at all.

Go ask engineers.
>>
>>54872541

To be fair that's probably what you'll be doing once you graduate.
>>
>>54865730

It makes a huge difference where you take it.

I placed out of 1 & 2 with AP credit so never had to take it in college and I'm glad I didn't because it's a notoriously hard weeder class that almost nobody gets an A in and many people fail. My GPA is probably higher than if I had taken it.

This is at a respected University though. I took calc 3 at my local community college while still in HS and it was a joke. I've also seen some exams from my friends schools which are lower ranked and they're objectively easier.

>>54872647

agreed. lol @ "notoriously hard." although i fucking hate your picture, and see it around campus for people shilling their tutor services, it is correct. first year calculus is like, a couple pages of memorization tops. it takes time, sure. if you have weak a foundation in math it will seem hard, but if you study a bit every day it will come in time. it's hard for the sort of people who do not have appropriate study habits. i always found i needed to consort other materials and do work beyond what was assigned to "get it," but this is shit you should be doing in university anyways. a good thing to do is find projects where you can actually apply calculus. but really at this level, it's more important to have a grasp of the mechanics of it than any deeper insight.
>>
>>54865666
satanic trips tell the truth
>>
>>54873077

i will say that in many programs calculus is unnecessary. a number of my CS professors have told me they never use calc, as well, and that shit like matrix math is more relevant and useful to them. only like, 40-60% of students pass calc at my school depending on the professor. it seems like it's a scam to inflate math enrollment and $$$ for the department, but oh well. if you need the credit you'll figure it out, or switch to some other shittier major.
>>

>>
>>54871752
You don't understand... that's my fetish...
>>
>>54873141
You need calculus for probability and optimization and statistics. That's essentially AI which comes up everywhere (spam filters, search ranking, recommendations etc.)

You need calculus for image, video and audio processing (i.e. signal processing)

You need calculus for pretty much any simulations (scientific computation, physics engines)

You need calculus for queuing theory which can be used to reason quantitatively about parallel and distributed systems and that way justify your choices beyond gut feeling or experimentation

You need calculus for control systems. This has applications in programming AC units to adjust their cooling amount based on sensors, or adjusting autopilot on some sort of robot.

Besides, any math you read should improve your problem solving skills and give you new ideas about approaches to otherwise unrelated things.

However, calculus isn't directly useful to most CS before reading further math courses so it will easily appear useless to many if not most majors. Maybe the most directly useful thing is being able to reason about Big Oh using limits, and calculus also covers series which can be useful in algorithm analysis.

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

if only I could be there when you realized how much bigger math is than your applied human garbage.
math transcends reality.

I couldn't pass pre-calc but I fucking raped calc1, calc2, and calc3.

>loved CS since high school
>mom forced me to into biology
>sucked at it
>convinced her to let me do CS
>currently doing CS at top school in state
>that empty feeling when your life is going exactly as you want it to but you still feel out of control

cal1-3 are easy.
have you taken a good course on linear algebra yet? It's pretty easy too but fuck me dead it's infinitely more interesting than java
>>
>>54882200
yeah, took a linear algebra course at my old school. calc 3 at my current school is half linear algebra and half multivar. glad to be done with math though, except for stats and combinatorics.

it ties in well, but some students thought it was really hard to have to learn two vastly different and now the math department is splitting a 4 credit class into two 3 credit classes. basically it's jewery.
>>
>>54882232
ah I hate when that happens. Just wasting student's time and taking their money.

combinatorics can be fun depending on the course content

stats was mind numbing for me though

Yeah, only if you're too retarded to get into a top tier school like UCB, Caltech, MIT, etc.

Same goes for CS.

What do you do?

ECEs literally get 100k starting.
I agree other engineering disciplines are shit (eng @ a top 10 school is acceptable, otherwise might as well pursue career in basket weaving, or get ton of insurances and commit sudoku)

Enjoy being a high school teacher w/ your useless PhD

Pure math is shit tier unless you're 99.9999th percentile genius (like Terence Tao)

>not being smart enough for your uni to fund you through grad school and hire you as soon as you graduate for a tenure-track position

I guess that's why some people become engineers. They just weren't gonna make it brah.

EE Degree with a focus in Quantum Mechanics/Fabrication
>>
>>54882418
Well.. If you're talking about Oxbridge/Harvard/MIT tier school, good for you.

My take is that studying (as in life career) pure math is as useless as majoring in philosophy, unless you're 170+ IQ genius smart enough to get at least a Fields medal. Otherwise the effect you are going to bring to the field as an individual would be so insignificant, and your career would be glorified mental masturbation at best.

Asian feels. You wouldn't know, bruh.

Don't mind it though. Hasn't hurt me so far.
