I update windows 10 blindly, then reboot into gnu+linux and run that for another couple of weeks again, then repeat.

If you have to use Windows, go for Windows 7. Also, turn the auto updates off. If you're using Windows, just forget about ''security'' and ''security updates''.

I just had the exact same question right now. I had it deactivated since october 2015 but right now my pc is having problems with the internet at start and theres screen tearing everywhere

So let it off or put it on again?
