With android you're dealing with literally hundreds of different models of devices from dozens of manufacturers running unique or near-unique versions/copies of each Android OS (of which there are dozens of versions and subversions).

Android apps are expectedto support just about every android phone. iPhone apps only need to support the latest hardware with the latest OS, since apple is perfectly okay with telling you "this app is not compatible with your OS/device" and forcing an upgrade.

Check out developing with the Android SDK vs iPhone, the first thing you do in any development project is select the backwards compatibility level you want (android SDK version). For a new iPhone app project it is defaulting to only compatible with the most recent 2 devices and major OS version.
