Can someone speaking from experience tell me if this is even worth it? I want to go from my Q9450 to a X5470 and I'm using a DDR3 mobo I'd like to hang onto. Thanks.

It would be worth it if from Q6600 or E8400 to E5450 or X5470, but not from Q9450.
Then again, its not really even a 'mod', so if you have the chips already, then proceed.

You could probably overclock your Q9450 to 3.5-3.8 or so.
The X5670 could overclock to about 4.0-4.2
However since both are same quad core, the difference wouldn't be that much.
Not worth the upgrade unless you can get it real cheap like $10 or so.

doesn't work on certain chipsets and it's buggy on some models with proper chipsets
otherwise it's pretty good, i was on a 771 mod for two years until i got a 6700k

going from dual to quadcore is ok, but Q9450 to a X5470 isn't really worth it.
Get the sticker, cut the tabs off the socket, put the xeon in the socket. Its easier than chopping the CPU and honestly you aren't going to be selling an LGA 771 mobo any time soon anyway.
BTW the results won't be as good as you're hoping, I promise.

You won't get any reasonable or noticeable benefits, so don't bother. As other guys said, it's good if you are going from dual core to quad core, but not for quad-quad trade. Better invest into graphics card, ssd or more ram.

it's worth it if you overclock the xeon. e5450 hits 3.6Ghz on stock air no problem with 800mhz ram
