I have wifi at home and wifi at work. I don't remember using non-wifi internet even once in the past few months or so.

Data is needed for driving with navigation and Pandora, when traveling, in hotels, on campus or in mall, and more.
Sure, the vast majority of the time I'm on WiFi, but mobile data still has its purpose.

You could use it as a laptop if you hook up a bluetooth keyboard. Small screen but at least you could type out some proper work.
Guess it depends what kind of work you're doing though, obviously you can't run Photoshop
