Install whatever you need.
Try to do all your package and system management using YaST, and see how it goes.
YaST has always driven me crazy because it's always been crashy or weird for me, so I always just ignored it and did everything from the command-line. I'm curious if maybe Novell or whoever owns SUSE made is sane now.
Report back soon, Anon.
I love opensuse.

Do you know if getting the SUSE certifications and whatnot have any value? They mostly seem to be a European gig, and I can't see a good reason for having them in North America.

Uninstall openSuse, install the one true Gentoo/Linux

How do you even "uninstall" an OS? Much less Gentoo, for which you can just... install. There's no removal process required.
>Boot into Gentoo livecd
>mkfs /dev/opensuse-partition
>install gentoo

Use literally any live image, then format the drive.
Then install the new OS, it's convoluted and unnecessary but that's how you "uninstall" an OS.

i tried to install VLC though YaST, it needed a repository i couldn't be asked to find. i prefer the symantic thing they had on unbuntu and debian.

and plus, im learning the hard way that the KDE environment pisses me off greatly, i think i might give the "gnu/linux" holy grail a shot
