How to fix programming burnout?

Computer burnout - solutions
1. Meditate once a day.
2. Sleep 8 hours.
3. Go to bed before 11:00pm - preferably around 10:00pm
4. Caffeine - reduce intake
5. Sugar - reduce intake
6. Exercise regularly
7. Socialise

You're welcome.
>>
>>54820848

Eat properly
Sleep properly
Get regular exercise
Have a social life
Have somebody to talk to
Make buddies on the course and work as a team
Have a routine
Take breaks
>>
>>54821246
Oh, and also spend more time in sunlight and less time in artificial light.
>>
Crossdress, I heard that helps
>>
>>54821260

I should add to this:

One day working after one full night's sleep is equal to many days working on no sleep.

Caffeine is a stimulant, not a rest replacement. If you have 10 hours to do an assignment but you're exhausted, you're going to get more done with 5 hours sleep and 5 hours working than you would with 5 cans of redbull and 10 hours working.

Being a trap improves your programming skills. It's a known fact.

These help a lot. Most importantly get a different hobby. I picked up lifting and reading

not everyone has the same internal clock.
>>
>>54820848
Do it as a hobby for fun not as a stupid job working on some corporate overlords proprietary project that will probably just be used by the jews to spy and enslave us more.

works for me.

You don't. You're just realizing that programming is boring as fuck, and not rewarding compared to the time you sink into.

Good luck anon.

>>programming since I was 14

My man. I had been programming on a pretty serious level since 15 and for all those years I was 100% sure that I would study CS but then literally at the last moment I had an epiphany when I saw resting on my bookshelf CLRS, The C programming Language and Data Structures something something and then also saw in my pdf library a bunch of random ajva, c# and swift manuals.

Right there I knew it. I dropped CS like a rock and signed up for mathematics instead. Basically pure mathematics, just math.

It would have been such a mistake to go for CS.

Switch majors and do something else?

>get a different hobby

Your programming neurocircuits are toast and need to rest (think type 2 diabetes of the brain). Take a break and get into something else, something easy, for at least 48 hours. You're pushing too hard.

Or start taking hormones and install Gentoo. Your choice.

How would doing any of this help? I never feel like programming now even tho I do this stuff. Programming is just time consuming and tedious to me now.
>>
>>54821817

You're exhausted and exhaustion leads to loss of motivation. Programming is a very intensive activity that you can't do tired.

When I was in my second year at university I had so much work and so little time that I became very stressed and didn't sleep or eat properly for a while. I put on weight and lost interest in programming. Although I fought through it for the sake of my degree, it took almost a year for me to feel properly motivated again.

Burnout is a symptom of stress.
>>
>>54821882
I'm not op. I'm graduated now with a job as a programmer but I have lost all interest doing it as a hobby. I keep myself healthy physically but I have just lost all desire to do any code if I'm not being paid for it.
>>
>>54821925

Have you been interested in any project recently? DIY, cooking, planning trips with friends etc? Even buying and playing a new video game?
>>
Don't go to uni for cs.

Waste of time.

LSD Help Store Set?
>>
>>54821954
Not particularly. I am kind of excited for small things like video games every now and then but just can't get motivated to do anything that requires time investment without instant gratification.

Good question. I've been burnt out for over eight years now.

You don't, it stopped being fun for me a long time ago

My only solution was to switch career paths
>>
>>54822081
Also known as "anons"
>>
>>54822042

There's your problem. It's probably a combination of boredom and a lack of deadlines which you grew accustomed to in academia.

Get more rest and try some new experiences. Reward yourself with small things for small achievements and write a list of bigger achievements that you want (and that can't be bought) over a year+ timescale.

Meet new people by volunteering for a local charity and signing up for every work outing. Offer to help them when they need it.
>>
>>54820848

Start programming stuff YOU like.

How about diving into some freaky langauge?
Haskell, Scala, Python..

It's a great time to be alive, so many differnt cool languages.

All those naysayers will tell you python is a baby, langauge, but buy a pentesting book and see how far python will carry you..

Or try something differnt, build a website, play with the kernel.. whatever floats your boat.
>>
Just do something different in your free time. Do surgeons operate for fun when they come home from work?
>>
>>54822613

Heh. This is a huge problem with the software industry. Everyone wants to hire people who go home and keep doing the same exact shit with their free time.

Personally, the few people like that who I've met have been absolutely intolerable. They tended to do poor work, presumably because they were too tired to think properly. They also had zero life experience, and tended to come up with the exact same approach to things over and over. "Every problem looks like a nail".
>>
>>54821882
No, programming as a career is just a joke lol. You cannot stay sane while staring 24/7 at a screen.

"Real" programmers never get tired of it.

>>
>>54821246
>>54821260
If you are a normie, maybe.
In that case, you shouldn't pick CS at all.
>>
>>54820848
Anon, I like programming, but (late, but not too late at least) I realized that 90% of programming jobs are boring insufferable jobs, like I don't fucking want to write applications for bussiness software companies, but that is what most CS majors get, so I dropped it after first year (I have a 3-year technical course in IT though) and I chose something else to study considering what I'll be doing when I'm working, sometimes the career is fun but you find out too late that work life is gonna be a boring hell.

Now I only program as a hobby what I want in the language I fucking want, for me C with graphic libraries (now SDL in particular) its a lot of fun, but I would have a chance in a thousand to get a job at that, fuck it. (I in particular am interested in programming circuits as well, but you have to be into electronics).
>>
>>54821397
Program something you want to make once and a while outside of school. I always make text adventures when I get super burnout. Also I buy a shit ton of coke every year or so and almost od for a few days
>>
>>54823757
lol wut.

have fun working 8-9 hours a day programming at a computer and then coming home and sitting on your ass for 4-5 more hours. your back will kill you.

>>
>>54820848
I'm experiencing it too, but my internship showed me the way out- for me, the trick is to work in a non-programming related job.
For example, I'm in the same situation as you OP, but I work as a devops guy. Never have to touch a line of code, just have to hound at developers to fix their mistakes.
It's pretty relaxing to never see an IDE or text editor unless I really need to. I spend my days writing shell scripts that make my job easier and documenting day-to-day stuff.
>>
>>54823826
Manual labor is worst.
>>
>>54821415
Change it. If people can adjust to jet lag, you can intentionally change your internal clock. It's your own choice that you don't want to.
>>
>>54820848
Daily reminder: there are people in this world sacrificing their lives working 24/7 just to make their shithole countries a slightly better place, while you just lay around in a climate controlled room pitying yourself for being "burned out".
>>
>>54821311
Immeasurably. I mean if you're bored, it might help! On a serious note: anything that mixes it up a bit. >>54821882 has it right on the nose. You're stressed.

>>54821246
Actually good advice.

Take a break and refresh your head, spend some time doing something that, for God's sake, doesn't involve computers at all.

But don't go nuts - you're in a middle of a degree at the point where things are about to start ramping up a bit. You're a bit early to burn out now - I really hope you're not thinking of going into something notorious for actually causing burnout, like the games industry.

>>54821694
It might help with creativity for a short while for some, but bear in mind the aftereffects last a few days, and the effects depend greatly on where you are when you take it.

I would suggest perhaps avoiding recreational drug use - self-medication to avoid burnout isn't always a bright idea.

>>54821617
Plan B's right here.
>>
>>54820848
become a tranny and demand equality, get hired by a "progressive" company (because they need to meet their "diversity quote") then just walk around like you own the place, get extremely angry and threaten court action if anyone takes issue with you dumping in the women's toilets and push all your work onto your male colleagues because everything you get asked to do it oppressing you

hey, you'll be in middle management within the year, no need to even finish your degree
>>
>>54820848
Take acid, no joke that shit'll get you right up

>>54823941

Get on that shit. Have you been to physical therapy yet?

Work on your posture. Physical therapy will tell you what's tight, where the imbalances are, what to stretch, and what to strengthen. Go on a couple of good ten to fifteen minute walks every day. Stand up, stretch, "reset" your posture, and then walk. While walking, focus on maintaining good posture.

Consider a sit/stand desk (preferably one that easily switches between the two).

Source: completely fucked neck for several years. Hoping to work full-time long enough to save up $30k to fly to Germany and have a disc replacement done.
