Manchester. It's cheap enough living out in the suburbs, and with no debt/wife/children/drug habits I end up with plenty of money left over (which I end up wasting on regular holidays). I could probably get a higher paying job, but I'm happy enough where I am and I'm working on interesting projects which matters more. I had a £28/k offer over at Media City but chose this one instead, and moving down South would no doubt increase my income by a fair bit, but I imagine it would be immediately offset by increased rent, leaving me with roughly the same amount of savings and disposable income.

It seems mental to me that people doing similar work to me can get 6 figure incomes, but I guess it all comes down to the cost of living. I want to try get on that income arbitrage bandwagon one day if I go freelance again - live in Manchester, remote work for companies in London, NY and SF.

They are using classes. But it is a mess of Spring, JNDI and Maven configuration.

One of the cleanest things they do is replacing variables inside properties files with Maven, then using those properties files to replace variables with Spring. In practices having two sets of properties for one thing.

Any way, is there any article about the differences between using XML and config classes with Spring? All my personal projects are still using XML, and I don't know if I should change this or not.

I know your feel, im in a similar position, working towards my BIT, it has lots of focus on CS.

Im extremely lucky that my job allows for some traditional IT and i also get to develop software for our managed clients. Its nice to code all day for a couple days, and spend others out in the field with clients actually working with my hands, keeps shit interesting.

Just keep looking, especially at smaller places which naturally force you to wear mutliple hats. A 100+ person company will have rigid roles for IT and for Software dev, and its difficult to find an overlap. Pay will likely be less competitive at a smaller place, too -- this is the tradeoff youd be taking up front. Im getting good experience instead and i havent even graduated yet.

>>
>>54804405
Well heres the straight truth... These jobs, especially at smaller places, dont always make it to indeed and monster online. There was no public job posting for the position i got hired for. Its connections, and luck. Try to leverage that information to your advantage. Show the poeple around you that you have a genuine interest, dont tell people you hate what your going to school for. Have good work ethic and a good attitiude everywhere you go, and eventually people will recommend you. Just focus on being of value, job offers come crawling after that.
>>
Sr systems engineer at one of the big software companies. Mostly do do devops stuff. Puppet, Jenkins, Python scripting/automation. About to dig into docker.
>>
>>54804405
>>54804557

Also im not in a tech city either, im in the midwest. There are jobs that you will like, you just need to look in other ways. The ones youre finding online are the jobs they cant even give away, and the good ones have already been basically filled ahead of time, with the jobs posted online shortly after just for legal reasons (equal opp. Bs).

You'll have to network and talk to people you know and work with. Someone, eventually, is bound to have an uncle who owns a tech business who needs some extra help..so on so forth. Theyre out there, just dont give up.
>>
>>54804557
>Try to leverage that information to your advantage ...

to be honest, I've tried that, a good lot of my friends have jobs, internships so on and i of course keep this to myself, unfortunately though the times where I thought I'd have an 'in' it didn't work out

one of the for sure times I just applied late unfortunately, maybe in a year i might have a shot if i am even in the CIS program still

and this last convention that my uni has it of course is the first year after the guy that manages it left for another job, so there's barely any businesses there and the few that are are advertising and boring web dev stuff, and the one company that my friend works for unfortunately never called me back despite having a good chit chat

had plenty of somewhat presentable shit but of course no one is interested in that, they just want web dev stuff, i hate this place
>>
>>54804623
>You'll have to network and talk to people you know and work with. Someone, eventually, is bound to have an uncle who owns a tech business who needs some extra help..so on so forth. Theyre out there, just dont give up.
they're definitely out here, not denying that, just not here

if i lived in california this might be a different story, but the only family i have that I know out there live up a mountain, a full hour and a half until you get to sea level
>>
>>54804696
And sometimes you really do just need to get up and move away if you can. Sounds like youre doing the right things, the only thing you can really do is focus on yourself and your studies until something comes up or you need to move away.

iOS software dev. Pays great, I get to write with real programming languages, and the API and tools are awesome. My only real qualm is that it's somewhat low-impact in the grand scheme of things (most mobile apps aren't going to dramatically change anybody's lives) but eh, you can't have everything.

The good news is that since my field of work isn't far-removed from more fundamental programming (I use plain C pretty regularly and C++ every now and then), I could feasibly make the jump to a higher-impact field pretty easily. I'm not effectively stuck like a front-end web dev would be.

>>
>>54806505

>>
>>54796111
..........and you have not a remnant of class.
>>
>>54806662
>http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/

Ah, yeah, that looks fairly similar to what I had in mind, however I was specifically going to target PhD/Masters internships (not teaching professors per se) and do two specific things:

1) You have to somehow validate that you work(ed) in that lab, so other profs don't slander you
2) Since PIs can move from lab to lab, country to country, tying them to a school doesn't make sense. It has to be somehow linked to their name or a paper they published under their name if their Joe Smith. Something like that.

You see, after using and abusing a couple of PhDs here in Germany, my PI won't/can't get any more to work for him because his rep is so bad -- so he's moving to America to start the circus up again. This is totally unacceptable. Making a career out of other people's misery might be a pretty good tactic up until now, but since we have the internet, we might as well use it.

I have something like that in mind, but for now I need to get my shit straight. It might not be necessary thought, but it's a interesting option, nonetheless.

It is slow as fuck, not counting the small screen. VMs are a no-go here. I'm also using a prepay plan on my phone so I'm limited to 500MB per week.

Constraints were supposed to drive me further, but I'm getting fucked.

I think I will hack my neighbor's Wi-Fi. He beats his dog. He deserves.

Until they start to drive your company down the road because you gave them too much liberty. Or maybe this is just a reflection of your incompetence and the company can actually increase its profit now.

I don't know if that makes you a better or a worse leader.

I already have enough personal wealth to live in luxury for the rest of my life. For anything else there are bankruptcy laws, so it's all smooth sailing for me.

Then you die at 40.

Great job!

I'm 30 and do landscaping at 12/hr.

Basically was a concrete laborer at 19 and then at 22 had a mental break down from all of the stress that the job and school put on me. Took me 8 years to even maintain a job past 1 month. Probably will die in my 40's since I had panic/anxiety attacks for about 6 years straight every day. Im working just so I can build a monster rig hopefully before I have another emotional/mental breakdown from all the stress of this shitty job and the fact that I do so much for such little shit pay.

If you have a degree in computer science, I don't understand why you don't spend your time making apps while you search for a job. Who knows you might even make the next meme game like flappy bird.

And then you can write app developer on your resume

i live right on the border in a state with no income tax. i now work in the other state.

the state i now work in happens to have the highest personal income tax rate in the country, so despite a ~15% raise compared to my old job i am in fact making less.
