I feel like I should be able to troubleshoot this myself, but I've spent about 30 minutes fucking around in settings/forums and haven't gotten anywhere.
I cannot get my computer to recognize a second monitor. I was using a single monitor with a VGA connection to my nvidia 970 for a few months. I just got another display from a friend and wanted to do dual screens. I swapped the VGA connection for the new (but still admittedly pretty old) monitor and connected my original monitor via HDMI to my mobo.
The display now comes up through the "new" display, and my "old" one is black. Any time I fuck with my display settings, it says it can't detect another display. What the fuck is going on?
Pic unrelated.

Also, windows won't recognize my original monitor when it is connected through HDMI alone, even with the second monitor disconnected.
You can not have one monitor connected to your motherboard Integrated video card and one on your dedicated GPU.
Connect both monitors to your Gpu and it will work.
