It isn't even the best CPU from its generation. The 2600K still keeps up with modern CPUs thanks to based Hyperthreading, whilst the 2500K sits down with the poo in loo AMD chips.

the 2600k is another 75 bucks in the used market. 2500k still kills the value end for intel in the used market.

given those figures, the 2600k is worth that money - money well spent.
110 dollars in gpu money spending wouldn't have done you that much good in the long run, that's for sure. given the stagnation of cpu's and relative inclination of gpu performance, for the past 5+ years it's shown that getting the best cpu you can afford will give you the best long term gains as you acquire new gpu's.
I got a cheap i5-2500k + z77 combo (used) off ebay after learning that Zen would only target HEDT $1000 market. It's fucking great so far and way better then my old phenom.

That isn't an argument. Some people have willpower and can stick to a set budget for a build and don't mind losing 13 FPS five years down the road. I'll agree though that the longevity of the 2600 is pretty damn impressive. I'm still convinced that most i7 users never thought they would need HT and just feel that their processor is "better" because of the higher price tag. Consumerist bullshit IMO.

What these retards always fail to see is that the real gap between i5 and i7 performance doesn't even begin to materialize until you have a completely MAXED GPU setup, and even then it's fairly small. Anybody who wasn't completely fucking retarded wouldn't be trying to max games out with a 5 year old CPU just to prove it was a "better buy".

4.8ghz at megaover-voltage isn't anywhere near double clockspeed at stock volts.
Celeron 300A still best CPU.
2500k is best. had mine at 4.8 for a couple years before my h220 died. now it chills at 4.7 with a hyper 212 evo it never tops 70C under any load. i do i wish i had sprung for the 2600k

Should I save for zen, keeo my i7920, or get an old Xeon for my old 1366 board?
I play gayms so IPC would be helpful, but id totally just drop 65bucks for a 1366 xeon 5650, just to drop my TDP by half and a few more cores.

I highly doubt that the desktop Zen chips will be able to beat out a Haswell-refresh K CPU in terms of IPC and power usage at the same price points. So waiting for it seems silly IMO. Whether you go 1150, 1151, or Zen won't make a significant difference.
