BCLK OC was how it was done in those days. I had an i5 750 at 4GHz for years, IIRC the "regular" 1st gen i5s and i7s didn't even have an unlocked multiplier, so it was all BCLK OC. Well i'm sure you're OCing far more than I am. The 5820k easily goes up to 4.5GHz, I have mine at 3.7GHz, a full 800MHz lower than I could easily have it, and playing with voltages I can get it stable up at 4.7GHz. Once that's done I'll be within 10-15% single core and much higher multithreaded.
i7 920 at 3.8ghz on air has been my main since 2008 or 2009 I think and hasn't let me down on a single game or application amazingly. I recently was gifted a 5960X so that will be the crux of my new 8 physical core overclocked behemoth
>>54787060
I'm running a comfortable 4.6Ghz (1.328v, 21c, 212x). I can probably push it up to 4.7~4.8ghz for benchmarking purposes (p sure it would trounce your 5820k then).
It's not that easy for a 5820k to go that high. 4.6ghz is very standard 6600/700k territory. It's 4.8ghz+ that becomes difficult, but then again I really doubt your run-of-the-mill 5820k can do that.
> I'll be within 10-15% single core and much higher multithreaded.

The fact that a stock 6700k is within 15% of a mildly overclocked 5820k with 50% more cores says a lot more. A 20% OC to match stock speeds? The optimistic OC of a 5820k is 4.5ghz. I advise you to not try going there (or any higher) in any case since the ~350W housefire you'd be prepping is probably not safe for either your mobo or your home.
>OC'd the multi-threaded blows the 6700k out.
Eh 20% at the very most on stock. Most likely less than 15% once you plateau on the OC.
5820k was a better buy when the 6700k cost $400+. Fact of the matter is that the 6700k has has higher IPC/base frequency, more OC headroom, comes close to the multithreaded performance of a 6 core 5820k and beats it in single threading (and probably multithreading up to 4 cores (possibly 8 threads), runs cooler and is more efficient. The igpu is a bonus too. The 5820k is a weird compromise between professional and consumer (like gaming) needs and fully satisfies neither. Not that there are proper alternatives that fit the bill yet anyway.
>>54787932
>The optimistic OC of a 5820k is 4.5ghz
Nigger shut up, that was stable enough to get CPU-Z validated and under 1.3v meaning I can safely (according to intel anyway) apply even more voltage and potentially hit 4.8-4.9ghz. However at that 4.7GHz my cooling is keeping me around 73c so I am not going to take it further.
Also, it shouldnt be a shocker that a 14nm part vs a 22nm part has higher single core performance.
>>54787932
>Most likely less than 15% once you plateau on the OC.

I dont need to over clock that much even tho the extreme editions were rated to be over clocked all the way to 5.5 if you were a pro.

This ain't i7-3520m. i7-3520m is clocked at 2.90GHz
>>54788843
I have that same CPU, at stock clocks and voltages I can barely get it over 50c at load.
At 4.5GHz I hit ~65C under load.
At 4.7GHz I hit ~72C under load.

H110i GTX with Noctua fans.
why does game-debate say upgrading from a phenom II to a haswell is 'not a worthwhile upgrade' when it's ridiculously faster?
>>54789128
>H110i
That explains the low temps then, that thing can keep my bro's OC'd FX-8350 under 70C. He's a huge fan of corsair, so naturally he got a H110i.
Pretty impressive considering it's a closed loop.
>>54789164
Yeah stock fans are loud as dicks though, the noctuas have the same performance and are 10dBa quieter.
All my computer use i7 at this point. It's not even because I have a use that only an i7 can preform. It's not because I've looked into it.
My first new desktop computer ever was a Ivy Bridge i7. Since then, I just can't stomach the idea of buying a computer that doesn't at least vaguely match that performance and with the same number.
Even if it doesn't make sense, if I see the i5 my brain just feels like I'm downgrading and I don't like that. My laptop is an i7HQ something, which thankfully manages to have 4 cores, and that's it.
I'm just stuck on i7 forever now. If I could go back in time, I would have made my first desktop have an i5. I have this same issue with RAM. My desktop had 12GB, and even though I never hit close to the limit on that, my laptop has 16GB because I can't ever let myself feel like I'm not upgrading and progressing.
When I get around to building my desktop next year, this means I know damn well I'll be buying 32GB of RAM for no goddamn good reason. But I can't help myself. No one can.
I don't even have friends to try and brag about computers specs. It's just me and no one cares. So why do I care? I don't know.
Help.

Should I get a 6600k or 6700k for playing games?

Any 5960X owners ITT? If so how well do they overclock? Would I be able to tame a 5960X running at 4.5ghz under 100% load with an air cooler?
I've done custom liquid in the past and I can't be bothered. Too much of a hassle for me. I'm currently sitting on an i5-4690k and while capable, I need moar coars for encoding. Would a 6700k suffice? Can handbrake even take advantage of 16 threads?
>>54789244
It's Intel's hebrew mind tricks making your purchase decisions for you. You have to break free.
Also 32GB of RAM is only like $100 nowadays so why not? I'm going to get 64GB soon.
>>54789265
For vidya, a 6600k would be better, put the money towards a GPU and a bigger SSD
I have a maxed out ThinkPad w530 being shipped to me, can I participate?
6700K in the mail :(

I usually convert and had a 3570K before. I thought it would be enough. But ME3MP shuttered when I played it while converting a BluRay in the background. So I bought the i7, now I can do both at the same time.
My laptops always had i7s, but on laptop you have to get the i7 because 4 cores.
>>54789316
4.5GHz is possible but you'd be on the higher end of the silicon lottery and i'm unsure if you could do it on air, but probably.
Most are ~4.2GHz on air.
>>54789406

fuck this
feels good. GTX 970 becoming pleb tier though, might need to upgrade.
>>54789420
>Everyone should get an i7 because everyone converts a Blu-ray while playing games.
I honestly don't think you represent the average population of video gamers. A better GPU and bigger SSD would be a much better investment for an average gamer.
>>54789518
i7 with 970 REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>54789482
just google intel retail edge summer deal or winter deal
they do it twice a year
>>54789526
I don't only game. I also record ingame. If you ever want to do that then you should get an i7 for sure.
And yes, I would prefer a bigger GPU and CPU overclock to i7 power. CPU is usually the smallest bottleneck in games.
