Maybe you should buy fewer gaming PCs and read a book once in a while.

Proliant gen8's are cheap and pretty versatile. You can't really build one that has a better featureset in that compact package for cheaper....at least, not here in Europe.

Haven't used it. It came today and I'm heading across the country for a wedding.

It's well built actually. Feels pretty premium, feels sturdy. I took a quick look in the chassis. Soldering looks good and cables are managed well.

(I appreciate things like spring loaded, retained thumbs screws.)

I'll boot it next week when I have some drives.

I'm trying to diagnose a issue with pfsense. On android phones, apps like youtube, netflix, and clover/chanu take a unusually long time to load the pages for their ui, with netflix taking literally 3-5 minutes to load the ui. Loading/streaming the content is as fast as other devices on the network, and if I browse 4chan/youtube/netflix in a browser on a laptop using the same wifi connection or on the same android device, they're both as fast as wired connections.
Tl;dr ui for apps loads extremely slowly, content for apps loads just fine

gen8 is shit. fans are stupidly loud unless you run your stuff on their raid controller. to run your stuff on their raid controller you need to load their binary blob into kernel space, and make sure you update it every kernel update (it isn't an officially supported package). you can't boot off a drive more than a couple of TB either, so you're forced to buy a dedicated hdd for the os as well and you have to connect it using cables for a mini-optical drive via adapters. it's also fairly power hungry for a server.

once you get over these hurdles it's ok. i wish i bought a gen7. it's better and costs less.
>>
>>54783853

B. I'm goddamn 35 and just sick of the "ZOMG! Guise! I got ansible on 3 rapsberry pies! It's a supercomputer now!" mentality that plagues this place. The little HP servers are glorified desktops. You can't stick 144 gigs of mem in one. You can't stick 12 drives in one. You can stick two cpus in one. You can't stick dual PSUs in one. It doesn't have a rILO port. I'm pretty sure they won't even do RAID 6 without buying the upgraded 120 controller. WTF does it do that a 5 year old desktop wont?

Not really, tho, they support ECC. THe tower form-factor doesn't make them more desktop.

The last thing is actually an advantage, there's a keygen for iLO licenses.
For the other stuff... So what? A backup/NAS server is still a server.
> WTF does it do that a 5 year old desktop wont?
It occupies less space, allows IPMI and have reduced power consumption in comparison with desktop. And I don't want that rack server on top of my wardrobe, it sounds like a Boeing.

Forgot that one, B120i is actually a fakeRAID, it doesn't even support SAS, but at least SAS connectors are there.
I'm not shilling for HP, but for that price it's a pretty sick deal for a file storage. The firmware and shit can be pirated and I know where to get it.

Why don't you accept the fact that you don't want a server? ECC memory does not a server make.

I've got a few real deal servers, none of which are loud with factory fans. I've got 288 gigs of mem to install in two of them today.

Okay, lol. If you define server as a 'unit' hardware - I don't need a full-blown rack stuff at home, I've got enough of them at work. But I define 'server' as a hardware which actually can serve PCs in a network, and it doesn't matter if it's a Netgear ARM box or 3U NAS.
>>
OK guys. I have a server with a Fibre Channel HBA and a disk box from an IBM DS8000, which currently has 7 FC-AL HDDs in RAID-Z1. I just came across the opportunity of buying five caddies with SATA/SAS interposers for the disk box, which means I could put modern disks in it. My server already has all of its SATA connectors occupied, and I only have one PCI-e slot free, which I'd like to keep that way until I get a 10GbE card and throw it in there. The caddies are €30, should I?

They aren't.
200 euro for a server with ECC support and vt-d in a small form factor runs for 300 minimum new. The only negative side about this thing is the fact that you have to deal with HP for updates, officially.

> just sick of
Nobody cares.

> The little HP servers are glorified desktops
MicroServers qualify under HP's enterprise program. The only real failure point is the power supply. These units are designed for small to medium size offices.

> You can't stick 144 gigs of mem in one
Do you have a server with 144GB of RAM? It's not a requirement, especially for someone fucking around with server stuff for the first time.

> You can't stick 12 drives in one.
You can't stick 12 drives in most 2U's, either. And most stuff is just compute anymore anyway, with storage being SAN or DAS.

> You can stick two cpus in one
I'd take a single Xeon 1240v2 over a pair of 5450's...

> You can't stick dual PSUs in one
Not racked, so multiple power sources don't apply. Get a UPS.

> It doesn't have a rILO port
A real ILO port? Yes,it does. ILO4. Dedicated interface.

> I'm pretty sure they won't even do RAID 6
RAID isn't used much beyond a RAID 1 for OS drives. Most everything these days is pooled. Also, RAID 6 is a license feature for most first party vendors. And you're thinking P421, btw.

> WTF does it do that a 5 year old desktop wont?
Aside from trigger you? Sit in the corner, be small, be silent, be under a support agreement, and stack quite nicely with the switches HP has released to go with these.

> Oh yeah. It's an HP so all updates are hidden behind a paywall. Great fucking choice.

Guys, I'm trying to create a new ISO storage repository on xenserver, using xencenter, without luck (pic related).

All the guides basically say the same thing: ssh into the server, create a directory, insert the repo creation command (which is basically using pic related), where you specify the name and location. But this error keeps popping up, no matter in which directory I am.

All I want is something to put the VM's installation media in, since I don't have a CD drive.

Seriously not a shill I promise, but I just acquired a bunch of retired HP SAS 15k drives from work (where I can also get SPP) and I'm thinking of buying a DL380 G7 for virtualization. Anybody got a good US eBay seller? I saw one who offered a 6 month warranty which seems nice.

Hey man, relax. I'm using the proliant gen8 as a cheap NAS box + ownclowd and maybe some low traffic web hosting.

I mean, the other options are:
build one:
