In my experience nvidia cards eat up more of my limited time because they have more frequent driver updates. It seemed like every other time I'd boot my computer it'd want to download some nvidia update.
While I've owned both over the years I tend to go AMD more because they rely less on driver optimization and more on raw processing power (although they seem to be updating software more often these days)
Sometimes I think I'm the only person who prefers to update drives once every six months. Hell it seems like people are willing to replace cards that often sometimes. I normally get 3 years out of a card (maybe longer if my 270x is still good enough for 1080p 60hz after this next set of cards come out)

comfortable VR? 60FPS in 4k or 200fps in 1080p?
AMD generally pulls ahead in greater resolution due to higher memory bandwidth and absolutely dominates dx12 and Vulkan thanks to asynch computing and more cores.
1080 may be the best card for getting 200fps in 1080p but if you are going to rock 4k then RADEON PRO DUO or the next fury is your choise.
VR shouldn't be one hell of an isue on both sides thanks to new hardware features.

since about linux 4.2 amd started supporting the open drivers and amdgpu, this is why they are so good. Their documentation is also way better. I bought amd specifically so i could use foss drivers that are good. i am on linux 4.5.4 so it really is quite good. i am glad the proprietary drivers are not their main focus anymore. Now the only thing missing would be making firmware-amd-graphics FOSS.
by the way is it likely that a 1080 or an AMD equivalent could play demanding games at 4K Ultra settings, 30fps?

In what part am I wrong? I was talking about the guys who don't have the money or who don't want to spend too much. If Polaris offers a considerable upgrade over the 970 then nvidia has only 1070 and 1080 to counter. If I remember right 1070 was $379 but I think that it will cost more like the 1080 does at the moment. Polaris will be < $350 for sure. I digged up 3dmark11 performance benchmarks for the 970, the best 970 scored 17300 with i7 6700k. Some early benchmarks show that the 480/480x scores 18 000+. A €220 480x 8gb beating a €340 gtx 970 3,5gb in every category (tdp, noise, performance) is for sure a great upgrade for anybody who has a current gen <$300 gpu. And when 490/490x comes out then it will even compete with the 1070.

Dota 2 has vulkan as DLC right now. It is in beta state but it already works great. I can play at 1080p 60FPS with slightly below average graphic on Intel Hd2500. Before i only could play 720p on the lowest. Vulkan is amazing.
