I was originally planning on buying a 28"ish 4K monitor and pairing it with a 1080p monitor, but I've read a lot of issues with scaling < 40" monitors.
Should I just go for 1 big 40" 4K monitor or is that plain retarded?
+ general monitor thread
40" 4k is basically the same pixel density as a 27" 1440p monitor, but with more resolution obviously.
So I personally think 40" 4k is the sweet spot.

What he said. 1440 @ 27" is basically as dense as I would reasonably go for a desktop display, so I'd probably work on more real estate instead. Maybe consider an ultra-wide if you don't care for the extra vertical space.

Not sure if it's because I am younger or not, but I have 25" 1440p which is a bit more dense than a 27" and it's still perfectly fine, less than 25" though and I would start having problems with text unless I did some scaling.

nah the scaling is pretty good by now. still some minor problems here and there but it's getting better every day.
however this means you'll have to go with the latest OS upgrade so if you're using windows you can't keep chilling with W7 but instead have to go for W10 since the scaling works better.
also one downside I didn't see coming when I put my 27" 4k ips monitor next to my old 23" 1080p tn is that it's fucking hard to look at the low res piece of shit once your eyes get used to the glorious DPI of the new display.
I still prefer this setup to having a huge 40" screen though unless you also want to use it to watch movies from your couch or something.
