Sorry if noob question, first year cs student here.

Would it be possible to have a mini vm running in the background on Linux so when you try to run an exe it'll just run like on windows, but through the vm that's always active in the background? Similar to wine, but instead of a compatibility layer it'll be more like an OS layer.

So pretty much it'll be
>Linux os
>windows vm active in background but inactive to prevent it taking system resources
>when you double click an exe, it'll run through the vm in a new window

Should have insane high compatibility since it'll be running in its native os, but it'll still be on your favorite Linux distro. The VM won't take any extra resources since it'll be in "standby" mode.

Any reason why this isn't a thing yet? Educate me on why this is a stupid idea.

correct.
you are posting on /g/, you do realize that, right?

The question is why the fuck would you want to do that? No one is going to have a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

You need a working windows os running on the vm, you could pause it for when you don't use it, but if you dream of striping out a working windows good luck with that.

The source code for winblows is not available, so you need to reverse engineer it if you want to striping it down, and you pretty much end up having Wine anyway.

Look at something like fusion mode for virtualbox

Nah I just want a vm ready to just run as soon as I double click an exe.

It'll be like a laptop in standby mode when not in use.

It wrong won't be as fast as native windows, but it'll be great for shit like Microsoft office or photoshop and will have better compatibility than wine.

>lack of software on Linux isn't a problem

>>54762872
Ok, you could have what you want with two things.
1. A type 1 hypervisor, something like KVM (yes it is).
2. A stripped down windows.

You just need the second, the first already exists.

So then if it's possible why isn't it popular? When the matter of compatibility comes up people always mention wine instead of this.
>>
>>54763016
You need hardware passthrough, like vt-d, 4 gud performance and not all processors support it.
>>
>>54763016
>stripping down a windows
What is the chance of finding that on the net? Is not like microdick will sell you something like this for your gaymes at linux. Taking the job to do it yourself has is time and skill too.
>>
>>54763061
You mistake what OP is asking. Is not a simple passthrough.
Also, more processors support it m8.
>>
>>54763061
Pretty sure things like Microsoft office wouldn't need anything overly demanding to run smooth, can you not offload the work to the igpu or something for more demanding things like photoshop?

>>54763069
Why strip it down? And I never mentioned games. I was thinking more like photoshop and office, or Sony Vegas. I understand there will be a hit to performance, but it'll be better than it not working at all.
>>
>>54762872
Then just run a Windows vm, suspend it, and rig up your system to
1) fire unpause command
2) send executable path to the vm

Script some shit.

>photoshop and office
Nigga, do you even know that works just fine with wine?
The other guy was thinking more in gaymes thou, that is why he spills things performance intensive.

And let me explain myself. You are asking to use windows software, running on a virtual machine, and transport that to your main operative system. Therefore you require to adjust windows to suit that particular scenario by "stripping it down", tweak it to work just to transfer the part of the program, nothing else. No windows desktop, no nothing.

KVM already offers a full windows desktop with high performance. Also search for vfio and virtio if you decide to go into it.
