Depends on what you want from your GPU, AMD seems to be gunning for the entry/mid-range price + performance segment, while Nvidia is chugging along with max speed for more money.
At least for the near future, Pascal will dominate the charts for enthusiasts who want or use VR, 4K or 120/144hz displays. Once Polaris lands, it'll be a modestly priced chip for the 1080p60 console killer HTPC crowd.

Pascal isn't even out yet. Likely it will launch slightly earlier than Polaris. Polaris seems to aim for 980Ti performance at ~300-350 range, then 380-390 performance at 200 area in discrete and mobile chips, if yields permit. It is intended to be more scalable and as a platform to deliver new GCN technologies (likely to challenge GPGPU as well as gaming with lower TDP?). Pascal is working on another league with enthusiasts to try and grab mindshare mostly, I think the 1070 will be the only card directly competing with P10 offerings, but still slightly more expensive, and the 1080 will be in it's own league. Pascal technology-wise is trying to make do on the software side like HDR and soft async, hardware wise nothing exciting. Regardless, neither camps can offer full 4K/VR/144Hz ready cards until at least October or 2017, whenever Vega and GP102 drops, which will definitely entail a $500+ card, IMHO not worth it.

you're wrong on the hardware front desu. AMD's chips have vastly more potential than Nvidia's it's just that their drivers are usually not great for the first 6 months to a year.
I'm going to buy Polaris just because of that. Nothing I play would even stress a 390X, so replacing my 670 with that but at a lower power draw is very exciting.
Plus, I know that the drivers will always get better and give me a competitive card throughout its lifetime.

we will probably know soon what amd has planned for vr, likely something similar to nvidia, and in that case, amd would probably be better due to proper async.

Multiple sites have reported it being pushed forward to October, and there's no reason why that wouldn't be a good idea. I don't work at AMD so no, I can't 100% confirm it but it's one of those things that's likely going to be true. No one can say until October. AMD has been leaking official shit like crazy though, and so far very little of what has been reported has been false.

Well neither of us will know until October. Zen had some crazy rumors about it that ended up being true, and now the Polaris rumors are looking to be plausible. There's a very real chance the Vega cards will be here by October.
But again, neither of us actually know.
