I wanna get a new graphics card in the next 1-2 months and I keep seeing opinions online that either totally shit on AMD or totally shit on Nvidia. Sometimes the pros and cons of one are the same of the other, sometimes the pros and cons are vastly different. I don't know what to believe anymore. One has shitty drivers, the other gimps their cards. One has worse architecture, the other has shitty business practices. Some say I should wait for the new ones, others say ignore the new ones. I just need some actual, preferably objective perspective. What is it with AMD cards and what is it with Nvidia cards? What's the difference? What's the big deal?

What I need is a GPU that can give me a great performance on my 1080p monitor with settings on max.

What's your budget?
>>
>>54704344
It's over, Nvidia is finished and bankrupt
>>
>>54704362
Oh damn I forgot to mention that. $300 for the card is my upper limit.
>>
>>54704364
Why? Aren't they much bigger than AMD?
>>
>>54704381
Then you're going to go with the highest AMD card you can afford.

290 is within your budget.
390 is a little over.

Do you think I should wait for Polaris?

Both amd and nvidia are good products both full of genuine merit to each piece of hardware.

In the end in comes down to what games will you be playing the most. Choose the video card that has the best temps, best fps, or whichever strength that the gpu provides.

Personally I have a 780ti. It's always been handy. Never had a problem with it. And at the time it was slightly cheaper than its 390 counterpart. I'm sure both pieces of hardware have their own strengths and weaknesses. But nvidia was my hardware.

Before this I had a 6770 from amd. And a ti200 from nvidia. At the time the both of them were great for me because the 6770 had less temps than its counter part. And the ti200 was actually better in performance and frames but it got warm faster.

In the end people here on /g/ are younger. Like around the mid teens area. And they haven't learned that hardware isn't just a general all purpose use. Linux is great and should be used for its strengths, Windows is a lovely product and should be used when windows is deemed best.

Op. Find which product is better for you. Research it and whichever one suits your needs is the one you need.

Well this new purchase is primarily so I can play Overwatch on max details in 1080p. I don't play Battlefield 4 or other resource devouring games.
Do I also have to consider the software that comes with the card? So far I only had Nvidia cards and they came with software that let me overclock it or set the fan speed and other small things like that. How is it with AMD cards?
>>
>>54704344
Easy choice, wait for Polaris 10 (probably 480x) which will be priced at under 300$ and will perform 10% worse then 400$+ 1070.
>>
>>54704847
Forgot to add that Polaris 10 will run all titles at 60+ fps in 1080p

Yes, even stuff like upcoming Battlefield 1
>>
>>54704846
>Nvidia cards and they came with software

Just looked it up and it's called MSI Afterburner.

since youre playing at 1080p the 3.5 vram wont apply to you. the frames are fine on a 970 with those settings.

that being said this overwatch game is highly optimized. its blizzards last chance at redemption. im fairly certain that all devices will be able to run this.

hell even my 750ti was able to run this on high during the beta and that was my nieces computer i made for kid games like tf2, csgo and dota

For $300 the best performance that you will get is an r9 390

Buy a used R 290 card, like the one in the picture.

They have a bios switch, its a small switch on the side to change bios.

You can then download a 390x bios. and flash your 290 card into a 390x. its the same chip, just new software to utilize it better.
>>
>>54705479
Just dropping by to say this is retarded and that a 290 and 390X are not identical GPUs and this is retarded. 390X is a 290X, not a 290.

Aha, so why is it so easy to use a 290x bios in a 290 card? Its the exact same chip. and works with no issue with a bios flash.

Same with the 390x mod bios. because its the same chip

even tho some of the memory could be different, so make sure its the same Ram brand.
>>
>>54704344

You shouldt have a issue with finding a used r290 card, for like max 150bux.

Nothing even come close at that price range.

And with the bios mod, you add a easy 20%

polaris when

one of the fans in my 280x is starting to rattle, the time has come to retire it
>>
OP here again. How is driver support? Do both companies provide game-optimizing drivers?
>>
I would go with nvidia if you want the latest and greatest, AMD if you want to save on money
>>
>>54704381
>>54705116
>>54704467

ACTUALLY
Don't listen to them. Wait for the 1070 from nvidia its $300
>>
>>54706402
Nvidia puts out drivers a day before game releases.

AMD puts out drivers whenever they feel like it or never
>>
>>54704381
R9 480X, shuld be $300 or less, probably less
>>
You might wait a few weeks or so.

980 prices are starting to fall on Ebay, I got a 980 windforce a few days ago fr $350.
>>
>>54708326
>$300 or less
>1070 is going to be $370
>Slightly faster/ on par with 980ti
>980 is slower than AMD's new shit
>Thinking it's not going to be at least $300-320
no
>>
nvidia until amd fixes the issues with crimson
>>
>>54708269
>1070 from nvidia its $300
the fuck are you talking about, that's at least $450
>>
>>54709482
>The GTX 1070 has an MSRP of $379 (~£312 incl. VAT) for the regular version and $449 (~£372 incl. VAT) for the Founders Edition.
If you've ever bought a new GPU before that means the first aftermarkets will be about $350.
