This. Most of nvidia's profit margins don't come from the gaming gpu market, but from the professional market. Amd has nothing which can compete with tesla at the moment, so that entire market is owned by nvidia. That's huge profit going for the way of nvidia on a yearly basis.

There will always be a need for upgrading.
If technology reaches the point where the average GPU can run every new game at max settings... just quadruple the number of pixels on the monitor (4K, 8K, etc.)
If that still isn't enough, just increase the refresh rate (120 Hz, 144 Hz, etc.)
If that still isn't enough, increase the number of monitors / multitasking. (I should be able to play Crysis at 8K 144 FPS on 4 monitors at the same time with 5000 Firefox tabs open and no performance hit!)
