But the manufacturers are already pumping the phone designs with the required sensors and hardware to make sure the transition works smoothly. If you watched Google I/O, you saw their Daydream initiative. This isn't a guess - the industry has clearly broadcast its intentions to do this.
Wearables in the 90's were missing several key features which made them not worth the goofy factor. They didn't have positional tracking, low persistence displays, high resolution and framerate, and they had basically no computer vision / depth sensing. The transition is going to be fast, really fast. The reason being that sensors are getting tiny and cheap.

If you solve that problem in your case then don't shy away from big screens. It doesn't have to be 6" or larger if you feel that 5.5" is better, but there are people in this thread wanting sub-5" purely because it's uncomfortable to carry, forgetting that you can't get as much working space on a screen that hides behind your thumbs while using it. I have hiked with my Z2 and it wasn't a burden at any point. I have two different battery packs for it but it has battery saver anyway which can be turned on to minimize draining. It doesn't run out in one day. The only time when large screen phones take more power is when you turn on the screen, otherwise they just have a larger battery for the same consumption, so they are actually more lasting. I use a 6P. It doesn't feel huge to me. My first smartphone was a Droid Eris, had a 3.2" screen. I've incrementally increased my screen size over time, from Droid Incredible to Moto Atrix to iPhone 6 with some others in between. I think if you use a 4" screen and pick up a 5.7" one like mine it feels enormous, but if you get there in steps it's fine.

They're getting larger because:
1. A larger screen is more comfortable to type on in Portrait, which is becoming the preferred text entry method (at 2.7", a 5.5" screen is almost as wide as an iphone 3G's 3.5" screen is tall (2.9"))
2. Phones are rapidly replacing the consumer's preferred method of internet browsing/social media consumption/media consumption and larger screens make for better experiences in these cases, while Tablet's are less convenient
3. Device size is dictated by screen real-estate due to a war on Bezels, and larger devices mean more space for boards, battery, modules, etc.
4. Larger devices are easier to cool and easier to design, both important in today's growing mobile market where phone processor strength keeps jumping astronomically
5. A larger device is more "premium" to consumers. Nobody will think you're fancy for spending $8,000 on a 32" TV. But tell someone you spent $8,000 for a 85" TV, and people will be impressed. Same for phones.
It mostly comes down to Psychology and Ease of Design as technology advances.
